Academy to Commend Arthur Widmer; Changes Sci-Technical Awards Venue

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a special Award of Commendation to Arthur Widmer at the Scientific and Technical Awards dinner on Feb. 12, 2005, at its new location, the Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel in Pasadena.

The AMPAS moved the event from the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel one of nine hotels targeted for a hotel workers union boycott because many of the people attending would not want to cross a picket line.

Two Animated Films in the Running for Sound Editing Oscar

Disney/Pixars THE INCREDIBLES and Sonys THE POLAR EXPRESS are among the seven films. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is considering for Achievement in Sound Editing for the 77th Academy Awards.

The Incredibles Makes PGA’s Picks for Best Picture

The Producers Guild of America included the animated feature, THE INCREDIBLES, amongst the nominees for its best picture award announced today. The other finalists this year for the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year kudos are THE AVIATOR, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, FINDING NEVERLAND and SIDEWAYS. The awards will be presented at the Guild's annual awards dinner at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Jan. 22, 2005.

Fourth Annual DVD Exclusive Awards Nominees Announced

THE ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION (Warner Home Video), THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING SPECIAL EXTENDED EDITION (NEW LINE HOME ENT.), THE STAR WARS TRILOGY (Fox Home Ent.) and MARY POPPINS 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Buena Vista Home Ent.) have scored major nominations for the Fourth Annual DVD Exclusive Awards.

The 2004 DVD Exclusive Awards, sponsored by DVD EXCLUSIVE magazine, a sister publication to VARIETY, will be presented on Feb. 8, 2005, at the Annenberg Building at the California Science Center near the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

MeniThings’ The Freak Wins 18th International Award

AIFF artistic director Buzz Schwall announced the winners of the audience awards and director Meni Tsirbas THE FREAK was presented with the best short film prize. This marks the 18th such honor for the CGI short, which also won awards at the Palm Springs Film Festival and the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.

THE FREAK is in pre-production as a feature with The Hatchery. Tsirbas follow up effort, TERRA, has collected 12 awards including Best Animation at the USA Film Festival.

Takuo Miyagishima to Receive First Oscar in 2005

Design engineer Takuo Miyagishima, has been voted the Gordon E. Sawyer Award by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He will be presented with the first Oscar statuette of 2005 at the Scientific and Technical Awards Dinner on February 12 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

Established in 1981, the Sawyer Award is "presented to an individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry."

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced his annual selection of 25 motion pictures to be added to the National Film Registry. This group of titles brings the total number of films placed on the registry to 400.

Blur Studio has produced two new 3D-animated shorts, IN THE ROUGH and GOPHER BROKE, that are currently short-listed for Academy Award consideration as Best Animated Short Film and are being submitted to leading international film and animation festivals.

7th Annual Independent Games Festival Names Finalists

The Independent Games Festival has announced the finalists in the seventh annual Independent Games Festival (IGF) competition. Selected by a panel of industry professionals, game development teams will compete for more than $40,000 in cash prizes. Finalists will exhibit their titles at the Game Developers Conference, March 7-11, 2005 in San Francisco and winners will be announced at the Game Developers Choice Awards Ceremony March 9.

The Incredibles, South Park, Spider-Man 2 Make AFI’s Top 10s of 2004

American Film Institute's annual AFI Awards has named THE INCREDIBLES and SPIDER-MAN 2 amongst its top 10 films of the year and SOUTH PARK one of its top 10 TV shows. Other films in the top 10 included: THE AVIATOR, COLLATERAL, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, KINSEY, MARIA FULL OF GRACE, MILLION DOLLAR BABY and SIDEWAYS, which will be honored during a ceremony in Beverly Hills on Jan. 14, 2005.

Ryan Makes Canada’s Top 10

Chris Landreths RYAN was the only animated film named in Canada's Top Ten 2004 and will receive this honor at The Toronto International Film Festival Group to be held Jan. 28 Feb. 5, 2005 at the Cinematheque Ontario.

Established in 2001, Canada's Top Ten celebrates the finest in Canadian cinema and is selected by an independent panel of filmmakers, programmers, academics, journalists and industry professionals from across the country.

Writers Guild Awards TV & Radio Nominees Announced

The Writers Guild of America, East and West announced the nominations for outstanding achievement in television and radio writing during the 2004 season.

In the Animation category, THE SIMPSONS garnered four of the five nominations. The nods went to:

Guinness Names Scooby-Doo the Most Cartoon Episodes Aired on TV

The Mystery Inc. gang has entered the Guinness Book of World Records with the most cartoon comedy episodes aired on television. A total of 349 episodes of SCOOBY-DOO have aired in 160 different countries worldwide since its debut Sept. 13, 1969. The series will be listed in Guinness' 2006 edition.

The series has spawned a number of different cartoon series, including: SCOOBY AND SCRAPPY DOO (1979); THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES (1984); THE 13 GHOSTS OF SCOOBY DOO (1985); A PUP NAMED SCOOBY DOO (1988) and the current WHAT'S NEW SCOOBY-DOO? (2002).

Incredibles Grabs Golden Globe Nomination

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. announced the nominations for the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards on Dec. 13, 2004, at 5.30 am PST. Animation fans will be happy to know that THE INCREDIBLES landed a nomination in the Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy category. Toons have won the category before TOY STORY 2 took the award in 2000.

Incredibles & Daggers Above Parr with Nation’s Film Critics

Several American film critics groups picked Brad Birds THE INCREDIBLES and Zhang Yimous HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS as their top flicks of 2004.

The L.A. Film Critics awarded the Pixar powerhouse Best Animation and Best Music Score, which went to Michael Giacchino. On the visual effects front, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS knifed Best Foreign-Language Film and received a runner-up nod for Huo Tingxiaos cinematography.

Zemeckis to Receive VES Lifetime Achievement Award

The Visual Effects Society will honor Robert Zemeckis (THE POLAR EXPRESS) with its second Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2005 VES Awards ceremony, to be held Feb. 16 at the Hollywood Palladium. George Lucas, chairman, VES Awards Honorary Committee, was the first recipient this year.

TELETOON Site Wins Boomerang Award

Canadian broadcaster TELETOON won the Boomerang Grand Prix "Version Internet d'un média télé" (Television Broadcaster Category) for its Website, www.teletoon.com, on Dec. 1, 2004, in Montreal. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the prestigious Boomerang is the only award that recognizes Internet productions and multimedia created by or intended for the Quebec market.

The winners of the prestigious Australian Effects and Animation Festival (AEAF) Awards were announced during the AEAF Awards ceremony on Dec. 5, 2004, at 7:00 pm. Featured as part of the Australian Effects and Animation Festival (AEAF) at the Sydney Convention Centre, the AEAF Award is Australias top industry award recognizing and rewarding excellence in 12 categories of competition.

Annie Noms go to Incredibles, Shrek 2, Shark Tale

ASIFA-Hollywood announced the nominees for the 2004 Annie Awards, which will be held Jan. 30, 2005, at the Alex theatre in Glendale, California. Just leading the features is THE INCREDIBLES, from Pixar Animation Studios (Walt Disney Pictures with 16 nods while there are 14 for DreamWorks SHREK 2 and SHARK TALE, with seven each.
