In which Chris Robinson asks animation professionals profoundly inane questions about the inner workings of their existence. Today's guests is Sawoko Kabuki, whose work is being screened at the 2018 GLAS Animation festival this week.
Sawako Kabuki is an eccentric young animation artist in the tradition of legendary Japanese animator, Yōji Kuri. Her work pushes the boundaries of comfort by depicting female bodies masturbating, defecating, and even puking. Her luridly coloured films are surreal and daring. There is always a tongue in cheek sense of humour lurking around in the corners of her work.
She agreed to meet me in a toilet inside a horse farm in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. We counted horse turds while reminiscing about Mr. Ed and his tragic ending. It was a Thursday. The weather was like Donald O’Connor. Hot. The time was not discussed.
