I Have a Question Karin Vandenrydt

In which Chris Robinson asks animators profound and inane questions that have little to do with animation. This week we challenge another festival curator/director: Karin Vandenrydt from Anima, the Brussels Animation Film Festival.

Karin Vandenrydt

After limping away from a successful career training Australian footballers in 2000, Karin Vandenrydt immediately followed the next logical career step and joined the folks at Anima (the Brussels Animation Film Festival (founded in 1992) to help them toughen up their programming. She agreed to meet with me in a stranger’s backyard in Ghent last week at 2:41am.

I get the greatest pleasure from....

Being in good company, in a nice place with (if possible good) food and drinks and a little bit of sunshine …. or being alone and watching a good (or even a bad) TV-series until much much too late, especially when I promised myself a long night of sleep

If I could have – assuming this is your real name – a nom de plume, what would it be?

No idea

The sport I do or would like to play is...

Here I follow Churchill: “No Sports”

A (non-family member) person I idolize is....

That must be David Bowie. When I hear a song coming up at the radio, there always is this sadness that he’s no longer with us… As for many people of my generation, he was so much more than a popstar; he was kind of a guide …

The song that makes me tingle is....

There are many but if I have to pick one I take “Dock of the bay” by Otis Redding

The funniest thing that happened to me….

There is this funny or rather embarrassing story from a couple of years ago when I was attending the notorious KROK festival in Ukraine, which is taking place on a boat, going from Odessa (from the famous Potemkin stairs) to Kiev. It has something to do with vodka (inevitably), being horribly seasick, being naked, a brass band playing on the shore and about fifty age 70+ tourists staring at me… but as everybody knows who ever attended KROK:” what happens in KROK, stays in KROK” …;
