Sarah Connor Pays 24-Hour Visit to Yahoo

In anticipation of the two-night premiere of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES Sunday, Jan. 13 at 8:00 pm ET/PT and Monday, Jan. 14 at 9:00 pm ET/PT, FOX will offer fans a one-time-only preview of the pilot episode of the new Warner Bros. Television series exclusively on Yahoo! The commercial-free preview will be available for free streaming for a 24-hour period beginning Friday, Jan. 4 at 9:00 pm PT and will feature an exclusive introduction by Lena Headey, who plays Sarah Connor.

Tara DiLullo Bennett chats with MPC's Digital Effects Supervisor Gary Brozenich about collaborating once again with Tim Burton, who gave them "a lot of room to participate in the development of the environments." Meanwhile, J. Paul Peszko enters the scary world of ONE MISSED CALL (opening Friday from Warner Bros.) with Zoic supervisors Randy Goux and Patty Gannon. Another case of the vfx playing a larger role than anticipated.

David A. Grafton to Receive Gordon E. Sawyer Oscar

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has voted the Gordon E. Sawyer Award to David A. Grafton, a pioneering designer of lenses for optical effects printers, which at the time of their development were adopted by nearly every visual effects facility in the movie industry.

The award, an Oscar statuette, will be presented to Grafton at the Scientific and Technical Awards Dinner on Feb. 9 at The Beverly Wilshire.

Vicon Supports Beowulf

Vicon provided state-of-the-art motion-capture systems and support to Sony Pictures Imageworks on the performance-capture hybrid BEOWULF from Paramount Pictures.

The film is the most ambitious project to date employing Vicon motion capture systems, and achieved many "firsts," including shooting with 200+ MX 40 cameras, and capturing the movement of more than 20 performers simultaneously.

Disney Utilizes Realscan 3D Again for Book of Secrets

Realscan 3D recently overcame a number of challenges to deliver high-quality scans used in Walt Disney Pictures' NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS.

For the film, Realscan was charged with digitizing several scale set models and various set pieces used as digital doubles throughout the film. Realscan's proprietary hardware and ability to quickly scan objects in diverse locations allowed them to deliver the doubles on time and on budget to Asylum Visual Effects.

Peter Berg To Remake Dune

THE KINGDOM director Peter Berg is set to direct a new big-screen version of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel DUNE, reports MTV. Berg said that the film would have been his next project, however the writers strike is preventing the film from moving forward through development. Berg commented that David Lynch's version "left the door wide open for a remake."

Ridley Scott Talks Blade Runner

With last week's highly anticipated 25th anniversary release of BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT from Warner Home Video on DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD, it's a very opportune time to publish some of director Ridley Scott's comments at a press roundtable, which VFXWORLD participated in.

Prior to embarking on the FINAL CUT, Scott decided to screen a print for the first time in about 12 years to make notes. However, he was so surprised and elated at how well the film holds up, that he wound up not taking any notes.

Anacondas Director Takes on Tekken

Dwight Little, the director of ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID, will helm the screen adaptation of the Namco videogame TEKKEN, VARIETY reports. CSP's Steven Paul and Benedict Carver are the producers of the film, which is being funded by Crystal Sky Pictures.

Penned by Alan McElroy, the script follows a martial arts master who leads a rebellion against the oppressive Tekken Corp.

Filming will begin Feb. 4th in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Raimi Brothers Drag You to Hell

Sam Raimi plans to direct the supernatural thriller DRAG ME TO HELL, which he penned with his brother Ivan, reports VARIETY. Raimi's Ghost House Pictures will produce the film, which is set to start filming early next year.

The Raimi Brothers first wrote the screenplay, which was originally titled THE CURSE, before working on 1992's ARMY OF DARKNESS. The story follows a man who unwittingly receives a supernatural curse and the moral ramifications that it presents.

USA Cancels Sci-Fi Series 4400 & Dead Zone

USA has pulled the plug on its veteran sci-fi series THE DEAD ZONE and THE 4400, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Both shows are credited with having created new life for original programming on the network. DEAD ZONE, based on Stephen King's book, debuted in 2002, breaking the record for a series premiere on basic cable with 6.4 million viewers. Two years later, the debut of THE 4400 broke the record again with 7.4 million viewers.

Mr. Eko, P2 Actress, Kite Runner Actor Join G.I. Joe

P2 star Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (LOST's Mr. Eko) and THE KITE RUNNER actor Said Taghmaoui have joined the cast of Stephen Sommers' G.I. JOE, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Nichols will play hand-to-hand combat and counterintelligence specialist Scarlett, while Akinnuoye-Agbaje will play ordnance expert Heavy Duty and Taghmaoui will be communications specialist Breaker.

The trio will join Sienna Miller, who will play villain Baroness, and Ray Park, who will play mysterious, masked, martial arts expert Snake Eyes.

Paul O'Shea Joins Asylum as VFX Supervisor

Paul O'Shea has departed The Moving Picture Co. to become Asylum's newest vfx supervisor.

After having met Asylum Co-Founder/Creative Director Nathan McGuinness, O'Shea was persuaded to join the team. "Nathan's vision for the future of Asylum, the quality of visual effects, and the opportunity to work with the amazing talent here was a deciding factor for me. This, coupled with the chance to bring my daughter up by the beach, convinced me to swap Soho for Santa Monica," said O'Shea.

Autodesk software solutions helped to shape more than 25 films for this holiday season. From golden quests to untamed landscapes, Autodesk technology was used to create complex digital characters, environments and visual effects, and to digitally color grade this season's hottest films.

VES To Launch White Paper Program in 2008

The Visual Effects Society (VES) will launch a new white paper program beginning in 2008 to better service and educate the entertainment industry on the practice and business of VFX. The first paper, titled "The State of VFX," is due out in March and will cover the industry transition to a digital-dominated production paradigm and how it is being driven by rapid changes in technology. Other issues addressed are economic and creative and how they all affect each other.

Chow Yun-Fat Mentors Dragonball

Chow Yun-Fat is set to play Master Roshi in 20th Century Fox's live-action big-screen version of DRAGONBALL, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Chow joins fellow cast members Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Emmy Rossum and Jamie Chung.

In the film, humanoid alien Goku is sent to Earth to destroy all life, but instead follows his grandfather's wishes to collect the seven mystical Dragon Balls, keeping them out of the hands of evil aliens.

James Wong is directing, with Stephen Chow producing.

Joe Letteri Promoted to Weta Digital Partner

Senior Visual Effects Supervisor Joe Letteri (THE LORD OF THE RINGS sequels, KING KONG and the upcoming AVATAR) has joined Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk as an equal partner in Wellington, New Zealand-based Weta Digital Ltd.

At Weta Digital since 2001, Letteri is not only being elevated as a result of the bar-raising, Oscar-winning vfx work that he has supervised, but also for playing a key role in attracting new productions to New Zealand, including James Cameron's highly anticipated AVATAR.

Trio Down for Dragonball

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA actress Emmy Rossum, HEROES actress Eriko Tamura and Korean pop star Joon Park have joined the cast of 20th Century Fox's live-action DRAGONBALL, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Rossum will play female lead Bulma, with Tamura taking the role of Mai and Park playing villain Yamcha. Justin Chatwin, James Marsters and Jamie Chung have already signed on.

James Wong will direct with KUNG FU HUSTLE's Stephen Chow producing.
