Prototype Game First To Feature Neural-THX 7.1 Surround

THX Ltd., Neural Audio Corp. and Sierra Ent., a division of Vivendi Games, announced that PROTOTYPE, the first-person shooter (FPS) for next-gen gaming consoles and PCs, will be the first videogame to feature Neural-THX Surround. The Neural-THX Surround technology enabled Radical Ent., an internal development studio of Sierra, to extend the surround sound experience from 5.1 to 7.1. PROTOTYPE will go on sale in the U.S. in fall 2008.

Military To Get Early Look at Sarah Connor

FOX Broadcasting Co. and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution have partnered with the American Forces Network (AFN) to preview TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES for America's service personnel stationed overseas.

The unprecedented sneak preview of the pilot episode will air on AFNprime Monday, Jan. 14 (9:00 pm viewer time), within hours after the network premiere Sunday, Jan. 13 (8:00 pm ET/PT) on FOX.

SCAD Announces New Chair of Visual Effects Dept.

The Savannah College of Art and Design School of Film and Digital Media has appointed Stuart Robertson the new chair of its visual effects program for the college's Savannah and Atlanta locations. As chair, Robertson will provide academic leadership and be instrumental in creating new curriculum, as well as serve as a resource for faculty and students.

Bond 22 Starts Production

The latest James Bond adventure in the longest running film franchise, BOND 22 (a working title), has commenced principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London. Daniel Craig (CASINO ROYALE) reprises his role as agent 007. Marc Forster (THE KITE RUNNER) has signed on to direct the franchise's first direct sequel. Kevin Tod Haug, who has collaborated previously with Forster on THE KITE RUNNER, STRANGER THAN FICTION and FINDING NEVERLAND, is visual effects designer.

The Foundry Releases Furnace 4 for eyeon Fusion

The Foundry launched its Furnace 4 plug-ins for eyeon Software's Fusion. The recently released toolset is brand new to Fusion artists, giving them access to a host of advanced image processing tools designed to enhance workflow and boost productivity in digital visual effects post-production.

With The Foundry's Furnace 4 for Fusion now shipping, Fusion artists will, for the first time, be able to gain access to a broad range of The Foundry's sophisticated motion estimation technology.

Wayans Enlists in G.I. Joe

Marlon Wayans has joined the cast of Paramount Pictures' G.I. JOE, VARIETY reports. Wayans is set to play Ripcord. Additionally, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to join the cast, which already includes Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Said Taghmaoui.

Stephen Sommers is directing. Stuart Beattie penned the most recent script based on previous drafts from Paul Lovett & David Elliot and Skip Woods.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Hasbro's Brian Goldner, Sommers and Bob Ducsay are producing.

At World's End Storms VES Nominations

The Visual Effects Society (VES) announced its nominations for the 6th Annual Awards, with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END capturing seven nods and TRANSFORMERS grabbing five, both from Industrial Light & Magic.

Following close behind with four nominations were SPIDER-MAN 3 and I AM LEGEND from Sony Pictures Imageworks, SURF'S UP from Sony Pictures Animation, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX and RATATOUILLE.

LG Mobile Phones To Support Iron Man

LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc. announced its partnership with Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios to launch a multi-faceted campaign to promote the role of technology in the upcoming Marvel Studios film IRON MAN.

Prior to the film's May 2, 2008 release, LG will unveil advertising, as well as retail, online and consumer electronics industry initiatives, to showcase the company's high-tech expertise and role in developing sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing multimedia devices.

Seven in Running for 2007 Visual Effects Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the seven films remaining in contention for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 80th Academy Awards. Along with such expected contenders as TRANSFORMERS (considered the favorite to win the Oscar), PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END, THE GOLDEN COMPASS and 300, were such surprises as THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and EVAN ALMIGHTY. Industrial Light & Magic is well represented this year with its lead work on TRANSFORMERS, AT WORLD'S END and EVAN ALMIGHTY.

Fluid Simulation Dominates Scientific Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced 10 winners of Scientific and Technical Academy Awards, with an emphasis on fluid simulation from Autodesk, Digital Domain, ILM, Next Limit, Rhythm & Hues and Scanline. The awards will be presented at The Beverly Wilshire on Feb. 9.

Perry Goes Where No Madea Has Gone Before

Multi-hyphenate Tyler Perry has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Perry -- writer, director and star of a series of films include MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION and DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN -- will play the head of the Starfleet Academy. The cast includes Chris Pine, Eric Bana, Winona Ryder, Leonard Nimoy, Ben Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Karl Urban, Chris Hemsworth, Zoe Saldana and Clifton Collins Jr.

AJA KONA 3 and Apple Final Cut Pro Provide Edit Pipeline for AVP-R

The KONA 3 video capture card from AJA Video was used with Apple Final Cut Pro as the editing platform-of-choice for Fox's ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM.

KONA 3 is AJA's top-of-the-line uncompressed capture card for SD, HD and Dual Link 4:4:4 HD for PCI Express (PCIe), Apple G5 Power Macs and Mac Pro systems, and was an integral part of the film's Apple Final Cut Pro editing pipeline.

David A. Grafton to Receive Gordon E. Sawyer Oscar

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has voted the Gordon E. Sawyer Award to David A. Grafton, a pioneering designer of lenses for optical effects printers, which at the time of their development were adopted by nearly every visual effects facility in the movie industry.

The award, an Oscar statuette, will be presented to Grafton at the Scientific and Technical Awards Dinner on Feb. 9 at The Beverly Wilshire.

Vicon Supports Beowulf

Vicon provided state-of-the-art motion-capture systems and support to Sony Pictures Imageworks on the performance-capture hybrid BEOWULF from Paramount Pictures.

The film is the most ambitious project to date employing Vicon motion capture systems, and achieved many "firsts," including shooting with 200+ MX 40 cameras, and capturing the movement of more than 20 performers simultaneously.

Disney Utilizes Realscan 3D Again for Book of Secrets

Realscan 3D recently overcame a number of challenges to deliver high-quality scans used in Walt Disney Pictures' NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS.

For the film, Realscan was charged with digitizing several scale set models and various set pieces used as digital doubles throughout the film. Realscan's proprietary hardware and ability to quickly scan objects in diverse locations allowed them to deliver the doubles on time and on budget to Asylum Visual Effects.

Peter Berg To Remake Dune

THE KINGDOM director Peter Berg is set to direct a new big-screen version of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel DUNE, reports MTV. Berg said that the film would have been his next project, however the writers strike is preventing the film from moving forward through development. Berg commented that David Lynch's version "left the door wide open for a remake."

Ridley Scott Talks Blade Runner

With last week's highly anticipated 25th anniversary release of BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT from Warner Home Video on DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD, it's a very opportune time to publish some of director Ridley Scott's comments at a press roundtable, which VFXWORLD participated in.

Prior to embarking on the FINAL CUT, Scott decided to screen a print for the first time in about 12 years to make notes. However, he was so surprised and elated at how well the film holds up, that he wound up not taking any notes.

Anacondas Director Takes on Tekken

Dwight Little, the director of ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID, will helm the screen adaptation of the Namco videogame TEKKEN, VARIETY reports. CSP's Steven Paul and Benedict Carver are the producers of the film, which is being funded by Crystal Sky Pictures.

Penned by Alan McElroy, the script follows a martial arts master who leads a rebellion against the oppressive Tekken Corp.

Filming will begin Feb. 4th in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Raimi Brothers Drag You to Hell

Sam Raimi plans to direct the supernatural thriller DRAG ME TO HELL, which he penned with his brother Ivan, reports VARIETY. Raimi's Ghost House Pictures will produce the film, which is set to start filming early next year.

The Raimi Brothers first wrote the screenplay, which was originally titled THE CURSE, before working on 1992's ARMY OF DARKNESS. The story follows a man who unwittingly receives a supernatural curse and the moral ramifications that it presents.
