New PS3 Software To Include Blu-ray Capability

Sony Computer Entertainment America announced the next system software update for PlayStation3, slated for release in late March, will add Blu-ray Disc (BD) Profile 2.0 or BD-LIVE.

This will enable PS3 owners to experience interactive features, such as downloadable video content, ringtones and games.

In addition to BD-LIVE, the system software update (version 2.20) will enable photo and music playlists on PS3 to be copied to PlayStation Portable, among other new features.

Clancy's CIA Franchise Headed Back To Theaters

Author Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan franchise could be headed for a revival, VARIETY reports.

Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with Sam Raimi to develop and direct a series of four films (produced Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Raimi's Buckaroo Entertainment partner Josh Donen) centered around the CIA analyst character.

Ryan has already been played by three actors in four mega hit movies for Paramount since 1990.

NBC's Bionic Woman Cancelled

Although unconfirmed by NBC, BIONIC WOMAN's co-executive producer David Eick confirmed to SCI FI WIRE that the show has been cancelled.

"I just felt that the process was so frustrating, and the conditions under which we were making that show never really came to fruition in such a way that I felt like we could make the show well," Eick said in an interview at SCI FI Channel's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on March 18. "The actress [Michelle Ryan] we found was wonderful. Some of the writing was good."

Berg Onboard The Dune Buggy

Peter Berg will direct big screen adaptation DUNE for Paramount Pictures, VARIETY reports.

DUNE is the 1965 classic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert that takes place on the desert planet of Arrakis. A war breaks out over the control of the spice Melange, used for distant space travel.

DUNE also was the inspiration for a 1984 David Lynch film and a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries with William Hurt.

The theme of limited ecological resources is considered especially timely, and producers are looking for a scribe who will adhere to the original work.

Director Mangold Sees Cyclops In His Future

Graphic novel CYCLOPS has been picked up by Warner Bros. for development by director James Mangold, VARIETY reports.

Cathy Konrad and Alexandra Milchan will produce the Alexis Nolent novel into a feature.

The action flick takes place in the near future and centers on mercenary forces who wear Cyclops-like cameras in their helmets for broadcast to a central command and people's living rooms. One soldier leading an elite squad realizes he's fighting for commerce and greed, not freedom and justice.

The Matrix's Chou Will Work With Wachowskis Again

Collin Chou, who played Seraph in the second two MATRIX films, told SCI FI WIRE he will be one of four leads in a fantasy ninja movie from Larry and Andy Wachowski, who will produce but not direct.

Chou did not confirm whether the title VARIETY reported as NINJA ASSASSIN was accurate.

Sci Fi To Get Stranded

Sci Fi Channel is a network of NBC Universal.

VFX House To Get Into Production

Framestore CFC, who created the vfx for THE GOLDEN COMPASS (and won an Oscar doing it), is wading into film production, VARIETY reports.

The new Framestore Features is getting behind Richard Linklater's ME AND ORSON WELLES, shooting now on the Isle of Man, supernatural thriller TRIANGLE from Chris Smith and five genre movies from Generator Entertainment, an new Irish house.

Framestore will executive produce, but will also serve as technical advisor on films that normally can't afford fancy vfx.

Michael Elson, head of film and COO at MPC has decided to leave to pursue other film production interests.

Christian Roberton, head of production for film at MPC will be taking over from Elson as head of film.

Marvel Sells Cable Rights To FX

Marvel Studios, in its first major TV deal since going independent in 2005, has pre-sold the cable rights to IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK to FX, VARIETY reports.

The deal also includes three yet-to-be determined superhero movies, none of which has debuted in theaters.

"This is a watershed deal for the company," said David Maisel, chairman of Marvel to VARIETY. "It's a real vote of confidence" in the viability of the Marvel superheros.

ABC Gives Greenlight To Raimi's First Rule

Sam Raimi's WIZARD'S FIRST RULE has been greenlit for 22 episodes by ABC/Disney, VARIETY reports.

The show, based on the SWORD OF TRUTH books by Terry Goodkind, will begin production in May.

RULE is being sold station-by-station, clearing 84 percent of the country in less than six weeks and will be on the air in all top 50 U.S. markets.

Empire Upgrades Shadow Vision To 3D

In response to consumer demand and requests from key theater chains at the Showest convention in Las Vegas last week, Empire Film Group has announced that it will upgrade its current production of SHADOW VISION to conform with the popular new Real D 3D theatrical format from Real D Cinema.

Recently released films in the Real D 3D format include BEOWULF and HANNAH MONTANA, both of which generated record-breaking per screen averages from 3D locations, eight times greater box office revenues than standard format theaters.

Carla Gugino and Garry Marshall have been added to the cast of RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

They join Alexander Ludwig and AnnaSophia Robb as psychic siblings escaping a group of evil men, helped by Dwayne Johnson as a Las Vegas cab driver.

The Disney film is a reimagining of the 1975 ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN.

The current Advil Liqui-Gel pour shot -- the familiar stream of liquid filling the Advil capsule -- had been around for some years and had been very effective in visually demonstrating the liquid-fast benefit of the product.

But Advil as a brand developed rapidly to become the top pain reliever in Canada andY & R needed an updated visual metaphor.

Warners and Disney To Co-Finance Bird's 1906

Brad Bird, recent Oscar winner for Disney/Pixar's RATATOUILLE, will make his live-action feature directorial debut with the financial backing of both Warner Bros. and Disney/Pixar, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

The story is about a college student investigating his father's murder who discovers corruption that will prove devastating for the city of San Francisco when the Great Earthquake and subsequent fire hit in 1906 -- the title of the movie.

Bird is rewriting the script, originally written by John Logan.

Uprising In The Cards For Petersen

Columbia Pictures' UPRISING will be directed by Wolfgang Petersen, produced by Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher through their Sony-based Red Wagon studio, VARIETY reports.

The sci-fi thriller is about the resistance efforts of citizens after Earth has been occupied by an evil alien race.

BLOOD DIAMOND scribe Charles Leavitt is writing the script.

Horror Classic Rosemary's Baby To Be Reborn

Paramount classic ROSEMARY'S BABY will likely be remade, VARIETY reports.

Horror production company Platinum Dunes (with partners Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller) is in talks with Paramount to bring the Roman Polanski original back.

The 1968 BABY was taken from an Ira Levin novel and follows a young couple (Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes) who move into a gothic New York apartment. The husband allows his wife to become impregnated by the devil in exchange for a lucrative career when he discovers their elderly neighbors are a coven of witches.

Headed by Shira Boardman, former executive producer at Sway Studio, the new company will offer 2D and 3D design and effects, previsualization, project management and supervision, compositing and animation.
