NBC To Retry Web Series Development

NBC Universal today announced the formation of a new digital studio to again attempt to bridge the Internet-TV gap.

The new studio, NBC Universal Digital Studio, will develop and produce brand-centric, digital content, distribute them across NBCU's portfolio of digital properties as well as find and develop digital programming.

Omnicom Media Group Digital has signed on as the first strategic partner with its Rosario Dawson-led GEMINI DIVISION, premiering this summer and zombie comedy WOKE UP DEAD.

X-Files Movie Has A Title To Believe In

Fox has confirmed the title of the new X-FILES movie will be THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE, per VARIETY.

The second feature, based on Chris Carter's cult TV show reteams David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. It opens July 25.

Carter is directing from a script he wrote with Frank Spotnitz, and is still refusing to discuss much of the story. He did disclose that the plot will not focus on the show's alien mythology but instead feature a stand-alone story about the struggle between faith and science.

Jeff Blake Extends Employment With Sony Pictures Through 2012

Jeff Blake has signed a long-term contract with Sony Pictures in which the respected industry veteran will continue to serve as chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution for the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group through 2012.

In addition to his role overseeing the studio's worldwide marketing and distribution division, Blake continues to serve as vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Universal Unveils First International Blu-ray Lineup

Universal Pictures International Entertainment announced plans to release 29 titles on Blu-ray for the first time, unveiling a line-up of the year's most anticipated film and television content to be made available on the next generation high definition disc.

This major international debut, part of Universal's global Blu-ray rollout, begins on August 26 with the release of the top-rated, critically acclaimed NBC phenomenon HEROES Season 2. The announcement was made today by Eddie Cunningham, President of Universal Pictures International Entertainment.

Atlantis To Rise For DreamWorks

DreamWorks has optioned the rights to ATLANTIS RISING, a comic book from Platinum Studios, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will produce the live-action feature adaptation for DreamWorks. Platinum chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg will also produce.

Shyamalan Airbender Project Gets Greenlight

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies have greenlit the live-action epic adventure M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN'S THE LAST AIRBENDER, which will launch over the Independence Day weekend in 2010, opening on Friday, July 2, 2010.

Shyamalan, the creator of the Oscar-nominated THE SIXTH SENSE, SIGNS and the upcoming THE HAPPENING, will direct and produce the epic action-adventure based on a script that he penned.

DreamWorks has acquired the rights to GHOST IN THE SHELL, and plans to turn the Japanese manga into a 3D live-action feature, per VARIETY.

Steven Spielberg took an active role in the deal, telling VARIETY, "GHOST IN THE SHELL is one of my favorite stories," said Steven Spielberg. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

X-Files Vet John Shiban Added Raimi Production

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert have hired John Shiban (THE X-FILES, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE) to executive produce WIZARD'S FIRST RULE, per VARIETY.

Shiban is currently with the CW's SUPERNATURAL and will help turn Terry Goodkind's book series into a weekly TV series.

WIZARD takes place in a fantasy world of magic and wizards, and centers on a man called the Seeker, who is destined to save the world.

Shiban told VARIETY he will draw on his experience with THE X-FILES for the show's structure and sensibility.

AJA Announces RED Support For KONA

In an effort to optimize support for RED Digital Cinema workflows in post production, AJA Video is adding RED-specific video outputs for some of the unique frame sizes that the REDALERT and REDCINE software applications can produce.

This additional support for RED will be included in the version 6.0 software driver for the award-winning KONA 3 video card. The version 6.0 software update will be a free upgrade for KONA 3 users, and will be available for download in late May 2008.

Whodoo Creates Shots For Anamorph

Whodoo EFX has designed, created and produced over 80 digital visual effects for the independent feature film ANAMORPH, starring Willem DaFoe and Scott Speedman, set for release April 18 by IFC Films.

Whodoo, under vfx supervisor Helena Packer Burnson, worked in association with acclaimed Senior VFX Supervisor Richard Edlund for the ANAMORPH project. The new film is a smart thriller, directed by Henry S. Miller, with Marissa McMahon as producer.

Sexton To Write Timecrimes Adaptation

United Artists hired Timothy J. Sexton to write TIMECRIMES, an adaptation of Spanish-language film LOS CRONOCRIMENES, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Steven Zaillian and Agnes Metre are producing the noir thriller about a man who travels back in time 30 minutes to prevent a serious crime. The rights were acquired by UA in January, when the original, from Nacho Vigalondo, aired at Sundance.

Sexton helped write the Academy Award nominee CHILDREN OF MEN and has worked on various TV projects like HBO's LIVE FROM BAGHDAD.

Horror Genre On DVD Gets Boost With Ghost House

Ghost House Pictures will launch a new film acquisitions company this fall to extend the Ghost House brand to home entertainment, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Ghost House Underground will release 12 to 20 films a year, mostly through Lionsgate -- owner of the SAW franchise and AFTER DARK series on DVD.

Ghost House Pictures is a horror genre company led by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Mandate Pictures president Nathan Kahane. The new venture will team with Grindstone, a major distributor of direct-to-DVD films.

Spike TV's telecast of the ad-supported cable television premiere of STAR WARS: EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH on Sunday, April 6, was the highest rated movie in network history and the highest-rated movie of the year on ad-supported cable in the key demographics of Men 18-49 and Persons 18-49.

The final installment in the epic adventure saga from director and creator George Lucas drew 4.2 million viewers with a 3.0 household rating (2,859,000 homes), 2.7 in Men 18-49 (1,493,000), 2.4 in Men 18-34 (671,000), and a 2.1 in Persons 18-49 (2,388,000).
