41 Valladolid International Film Festival, October 18/26 1996

41 Semana 1996

We are delighted to present the full film listings for the 41st Valladolid International Film Festival. The choice of films this year is better than ever, a fascinating panorama of world cinema. Alongside the Official Section and Meeting Point which feature the latest releases, there are the many Sidebars, each one with its own focus - on a particular film maker, a country's cinema or a film school.

This year we are screening a grand total of 218 films - 134 features and 84 shorts in 12 cinemas, with 34 screenings every day and 295 screenings over the nine days of the festival.

FOCUS ON AUSTRALIAN CINEMA (1975 - 1995)

In the second half of the seventies, Australia burst on to the international cinema scene with surprising vigour. Since then, it has continued to produce films of quality characterised by the impact of their imagery, their almost industrial strength and the personality of their directors. Twenty features and twenty shorts will be on show, including well-known titles alongside films not previously released in Spain.

Shorts:

This sidebar has been arranged with the assistance of the Australian
Film Commission

JOSÉ NIETO

One of Spain's most famous musicians, José Nieto has written over fifty scores for the cinema and television. He has collaborated with some of Spain's most outstanding directors (including Vicente Aranda, Imanol Uribe and Pilar Mir - to name but a few) and has won a Goya Award (the Spanish equivalent of a Oscar) no less than five times. He has also composed for many television programmes, both for Spanish television and the BBC.

From all the films to which José Nieto has contributed we have chosen:

GORAN PASKALJEVIC

"Someone Else's America" won the Golden Spike at the 1995 festival - but that isn't our only reason for presenting this sidebar, since we believe that since his work is so little known in Spain, and as he is undoubtedly one of Europe's foremost directors, it's time to dedicate this part of our festival to his work with his ten feature length films and a selection of his best shorts.

Raoul ServaisRAOUL SERVAIS

Two years ago, we had fully intended to screen all the films of this Belgian master of animation, but the long production time of "Taxandria" meant that we were unable to do so. At long last, we can finally offer his eleven shorts and one feature - a small output in terms of numbers but a large crop as far as creative talent is concerned. This is a chance to view the complete works of a filmmaker who imaginative capacity runs on a par with his consistent denouncement of all forms of oppression and dictatorship.

MASSIMO TROISI

The enormous success of IL POSTINO, premiered in Spain at last year's festival, has created a special interest in the figure of Massimo Troisi, who died last year when he was only 41. Valladolid is dedicating this postumous tribute with the screening of five films that he directed and starred in (of which only one is known in Spain), and four in which he took the main lead, three of them with Ettore Scola as director.

THE DANISH FILMSCHOOL
(Copenhagen)

The internationally regarded National Danish Film School is based in Copenhagen. A maximum of six students are accepted each year in each of the five departments - Direction, Photography, Design, Sound and Production. The students' final projects have a quality noticeably better than that usually found in these places, and we have chosen a small selection of eight films, including one by Lars Von Trier, whose "Breaking The Waves" opens this year's festival.

SPANISH CINEMA 1995/6

Last year is reckoned to have been one of the best for Spanish cinema for some time. Judge for yourself with our selection of the latest and most outstanding Spanish films that have been released over the previous twelve months. All the films have English or French subtitles, since this section is particularly geared towards those visiting professionals and journalists who want to take a closer look at what our national cinema has to offer.
