Nelvana Chills with Coolroom

U.K.-based digital download store Coolroom announced today that it has signed its first kids digital retail agreement with Canadian animation company Nelvana Enterprises.

Over 650 episodes from Nelvana's library will be made available digitally at both Coolroom's download store (www.coolroom.com) and on Coolroom's bespoke and unique IPTV channel across Microsoft Media Center.

Military To Get Early Look at Sarah Connor

FOX Broadcasting Co. and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution have partnered with the American Forces Network (AFN) to preview TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES for America's service personnel stationed overseas.

The unprecedented sneak preview of the pilot episode will air on AFNprime Monday, Jan. 14 (9:00 pm viewer time), within hours after the network premiere Sunday, Jan. 13 (8:00 pm ET/PT) on FOX.

China To Crack Down on Web Content

China will institute new rules at the end of the month that limit the broadcast of video or audio content on the Internet to state-run sites, BLOOMBERG NEWS and THE NEW YORK TMES report. Beginning Jan. 31, only government-run entities will be licensed to disseminate material, which may not promote sex, violence, gambling, or religious cults, or reveal state secrets.

Gaumont Acquires Alphanim

Venerable French film company Gaumont has bought top animation producer Alphanim, with details of the deal expected to be announced next week, reports C21 MEDIA.

Alphanim founder and CEO Christian Davin said that the partnership would allow his company "to establish synergies with Gaumont, for instance, in the theatrical business, in producing more animated feature films" and to expand into producing multi-platform content, as well as enhancing its licensing and distribution activities.

BBC To Unveil Musical Freefonix

The BBC has announced the launch of new CGI series FREEFONIX, a co-production of Cinnamon Entertainment (U.K.) and Method Films (Paris) that was animated in India. The 40x30 show, one of the largest in its genre put together by a U.K. production company and the largest commission by the BBC for an animation aimed at seven- to 11-year-olds, will premiere Friday on BBC kids channel CBBC.

Percept Plans Expansion on Eve of Hunuman Premiere

Mumbai-based Percept Holdings, parent company of Percept Picture Company, has announced its intention to set up its own high-end animation studio, reports ANIMATION XPRESS. CEO Preet Bedi said that the company's focus will be on "building in knowledge, ability and experience into the set up." He predicted that the new studio will begin operations by the end of next year. Funding for the project will come from recent stakes acquired by Future Group (12.5%) and Morgan Stanley (10%) in the company.

Neptuno Makes Asian Gains

Barcelona-based animation company Neptuno Films has signed contracts for its new series THE GLOOPS (completed) and ZOOMIX (in production) with C4U for the Korean market, and other agreements are being negotiated.

THE GLOOPS (104x3) is a 3D animated preschool series without dialogue, in which an extraterrestrial family invites viewers to guess the origins of different sounds. It was launched last November on the VOOM HD platform's high-definition channel Animania, for the North American market.
