MTV Animation Internship
In Summer 1995, 29-year old Otto Flavio de Barros Galvao of Rio, Brazil, traveled to New York City to study animation with MTV Animation for three months.
One of the requirements of the UNICEF internship program is to work on a project which can have a positive impact in the intern's country of origin. Otto Flavio chose to deal with a major issue in Brazil, street kids. Otto wrote, directed and animated a five-minute piece which tells the story of two young street boys who meet up and become involved with a UNICEF- sponsored shelter. Writing, storyboarding, drawing, coloring and animating a five-minute short in a period of three months was quite a challenge, so Otto Flavio received some inking and painting help from MTV interns, and animator James Dean Conklin helped Otto put all of his elements together in the computer to create the finished animatic. Parts of the short are animated. Otto Flavio went one step further and wrote the music accompanying the short, including a rap song the two main characters sing at the end of the film.
UNICEF hopes to distribute Otto Flavio's short for 1997's International Children's Day of Broadcasting. Otto Flavio has since returned to Brazil, where he would like to pursue a career in animation.
