Von Armstadt and his beautiful wife spent a fortnight at the famous German Health Spa and Casino of Baden Baden, in May 1928. Von Armstadt, returning from a nerve-wrecking business trip in which he had narrowly salvaged his interests in the Saudi oilfields, met up with Emmy just in time for their second wedding anniverary. The rigid course of alternating hot and cold baths and massages was Van Armstadt's favorite way to relax and replenish his energy. Otto Babelsberg, Von Armstadt's longtime business companion, declared he found his friend in good spirits, even though he lost a small fortune at the tables. His young wife however seemed to be very moody and ill at ease at first. Later, she transformed herself, blossomed and engaged in horseback riding and clay-pigeon shooting. |
