Records of the Cunart line show that in July 1928 Emmy Buckingham Parker had made enquiries about fares to North and South America. She made reservations for two on the SS L'Amerique Du Sud, but later cancelled. Odille de Lafayette, a lifelong confidente of Emmy, stated she knew her friend was in love with "the idea" of the Americas. She adored tango-music ever since she had had a one weekend fling with a Jorge Aragon, son of a renowned Brazilian coffee planter. There have been rumours that place Emmy in Havana in May 1929 in the company of Venezuelan oil tycoon Manuel Gonzales da Silva. Although there was never any proof that the Von Armstadt murder was connected to a liaison between Buckingham Parker and Da Silva, it is indisputably true that Da Silva's hold on the global oil market grew stronger upon Von Armstadt's demise, as the Von Armstadt empire crumbled under the misguided management of younger brother Jurgen. Emmy was reportedly seen on board of Da Silva's private yacht as it set sail for Port au Prince. The yacht was blown up in a violent explosion that took seventeen lives and was ultimately attributed to the Cuban mafia. Other reports place Emmy in Bombay in the December 1929 and in Nairobi in 1934. It seems unlikely that the world will ever know what really happened to her... |
