T.R.A.N.S.I.T is a co-production of The Illuminated Film Company and Picture Start, for Channel 4, The Dutch Film Fund and Canal +. The film is supported by The National Lottery through The Arts Council of England.
The original synopsis for a 5 minute animated film T.R.A.N.S.I.T, written by Piet Kroon, in 1993 won the first prize in a scenario contest celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Holland Animation Association.
The scenario was recognized by British producer Iain Harvey, and together with co-producer Cecile Wijne he went on a quest for international financing of the project, that had by then developed into a richer, more layered scenario for a 12 minute film.
T.R.A.N.S.I.T received the support of the British broadcaster Channel 4 and of the Dutch Film Fund, a government sponsored fund that stimulates the production of feature films, documentaries and short films, including animation and experimental film. In 1997 the project was also granted an award under the National Lottery Funding for Film Scheme through the Arts Council of England.
T.R.A.N.S.I.T presents a classic nineteen-twenties love tragedy as a mystery for the audience to unravel. Designed in the beautiful art styles of that period, the film evokes the grand lifestyle of the rich, traveling around the luxurious resorts and hotels. There is no dialogue, but a stunning and evocative score by Julian Nott.
The story is told in seven separate sequences, each in its own distinctive graphic style.
Under the direction of Piet Kroon, each sequence was animated by a different artist. The animators, most of them filmmakers in their own right, were cast on the basis of their work and their stylistic and atmospheric genius.
The production designer, Gill Bradley, created the different styles for each sequence.
With the director working from Los Angeles, and the animators working in London, Cardiff, Amsterdam, and the south and north of France, the production demanded a structured organization and many intercontinental deliberations.
