Classic Creatures Come Alive for Universal

Universal Pictures has purchased the film rights to Larry Doyle's novel GO MUTANTS!, per VARIETY. Doyle is set to write the script and Imagine Ent.'s Brian Grazer will produce.

A teen comedy set in a high school, GO MUTANTS! imagines if all the classic 1950s alien invasion movies came true, and years later, the children of the mutant creatures have assimilated into the school's population.

Universal Working to Bring Bride of Frankenstein to Life

Universal and Imagine are in talks with Neil Burger to write and direct a remake of BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER's Risky Business Blog.

Burger wrote and directed THE ILLUSIONIST for Yari Film Group.

The original BRIDE was released in 1935, starring Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as his bride, picking up where 1931's FRANKENSTEIN left off.

Brian Grazer and Sean Daniel will produce with Karen Kehela, David Bernardi and Chris Wade will oversee for Imagine.

Rogen will play the voice of Paul. Rogen recently voiced the character B.O.B. for DreamWorks Animation's MONSTERS VS. ALIENS.

King Kong will re-emerge on the newly upgraded Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour in summer 2010 as a 4-D multi-sensory marvel, a new signature attraction for Universal Studios Hollywood.

The new King Kong attraction, based on the Oscar-winning 2005 Universal Pictures film, will combine thrilling visceral effects with the world's largest Surround Digital projection system to create a next-generation theme park experience.

Universal has hired HANCOCK director Peter Berg to sink battleships, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Jon and Erich Hoeber have been commissioned to adapt the classic Hasbro game. While no plot details have surfaced, Universal is looking for a big naval action flick out of this one.

Universal Pictures, starting up their three-year deal with Dark Horse Comics, will make UMBRELLA ACADEMY into a feature film, per VARIETY.

UMBRELLA was created by Gerard Way, the lead singer of rock band My Chemical Romance, and will have a script by RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN's Mark Bomback.

First published in 2007 and spinning of a second series, the property is about a disbanded group of superheroes who reunite after the death of their adoptive father, who was an alien. They carry out his plan to save the world.

Universal Sends Harris to Dante's Inferno

Universal Pictures has hired Dan Harris to write the screenplay for EA videogame adaptation DANTE'S INFERNO, per VARIETY. Harris co-wrote X-MEN 2 and SUPERMAN RETURNS.

EA VP Patrick O'Brien and game creator Jonathan Knight are involved in developing the film, about a journey through the depths of hell. Strike Ent.'s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are producing with EA Entertainment. Universal bought the rights last fall, before the game's title had even been officially announced, in a four-studio bidding war.

Kennedy/Marshall Headed for Sony

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are set to leave Universal Pictures, per VARIETY, and will have a first-look deal at Columbia Pictures that starts April 1.

The frequent Steven Spielberg collaborators, who started their company in 1991, will be at Columbia for an 18-month term. Their last Universal film was THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM.

Universal Looks at More Ludlum

Universal is in negotiations for the film rights to Robert Ludlum's THE PARSIFAL MOSAIC, in what could be the first major project for Captivate Ent., the company that controls the rights to Ludlum's novels, per VARIETY.

Universal and Captivate signed an overall deal last year, in the wake of the studio's success with the BOURNE IDENTITY series. The deal gives Universal first-look at all Ludlum titles, 25 of which haven't been optioned off yet, as well as the rights to continue the BOURNE series into a fourth film and beyond.

NBC Universal Global Networks has launched Universal Channel and Sci Fi Channel on now TV in Hong Kong in January 2009.

The move is part of NBCU Global Network's ongoing channels expansion in Asia and central to the company's objective, led by Roma Khanna, President, Global Networks & Digital Initiatives, to grow to over 100 channels internationally by 2010.

Universal Channel (now TV channel 522) and Sci Fi (now TV channel 124) are available with traditional Chinese subtitling.
