Headline News WGBH & Studio B to Produce Martha Speaks Animated Series For Public TV

WGBH Boston and Canada's Studio B Prods. Inc. have teamed up to develop and co-produce a new animated series based on the award-winning MARTHA SPEAKS children's book series by Susan Meddaugh, for public television in fall 2008.

The property will be developed into 40 half-hour episodes, designed to enrich children's vocabulary within the context of compelling stories. Studio B has international distribution rights for the property.

Headline News Oneida Legend Comes to 3D-Animated Life

The Oneida Indian Nation's Four Directions Prods. today (April 12, 2007) announced completion of its first 3D animated short film, which tells the ancient Oneida legend of RACCOON AND CRAWFISH. The eight-minute film will debut at the Syracuse International Film Festival on April 18, 2007.

The project represents a new milestone for the up-and-coming studio, according to Dale Rood, director of studio operations for Four Directions Prods. and a Turtle Clan representative to the Nation's Men's Council.

Headline News Toho Announces Details of Miyazaki's Next Film

Toho has announced that in summer 2008 it will release Hayao Miyazaki's latest feature, GAKE NO UE NO PONYO (PONYO ON A CLIFF). Studio Ghibli is of course producing.

The follow-up to his $169 million worldwide grosser HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE will follows Ponyo, a goldfish princess that wants to become human. Miyazaki will also write the original story. A five-year-boy, who befriends Ponyo in the story, is based on his grandson, who is the son of Goro Miyazaki, the director the animated feature TALES FROM EARTHSEA.

Studio 2.0, a South Korean film studio and multimedia firm, has inked a video-on-demand agreement with RealNetworks Inc., according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The deal will start in the Asia-Pacific region and will grow upon the reaction to the initial launch.

Studio B Prods. Inc. has brought aboard Anthony Jiwa as the Vancouver animation house's new director of marketing and Kirsten Newlands has been named as head of production.

Jiwa was director of marketing at VIZ Media where he led marketing efforts for the company's publishing and home entertainment divisions, including such properties as POKÉMON, NARUTO and INUYASHA.

HIT Ent. has brought onboard Andi Copley as md/exec producer of its award-winning animation studio, HOT Animation. The announcement was made as part of a company-wide strategy to focus on three core brands, Disney, ABC and ESPN.

Headline News e frontier Sees Big Sales for Anime Studio 5

Since the release of Anime Studio 5 earlier in the fall, e frontier America Inc. has seen impressive sales of its 2D animation and cartoon creation software. Anime Studio was previously known as Moho.

Anime Studio utilizes a "bone rigging" system normally found only in 3D graphics software that streamlines the animation workflow and reduces production time. It was extremely close, but the dancing penguins beat 007 in their head-to-head opening shootout by less than $1M for the weekend ended Nov. 19, 2006. Warner Bros.' HAPPY FEET (the first 3D-animated feature from Animal Logic) scored $41.5M, while Sony's CASINO ROYALE, the 21st James Bond movie and first with Daniel Craig, hit the jackpot with $40.8M (vfx by Peerless Camera). That's the second best opening in Bond franchise history (DIE ANOTHER DAY topped $45M). Meanwhile, overseas, CASINO ROYALE raked in another $42M in 27 countries, including a record $25.6M in the U.K.

Buena Vista Games, Inc. (BVG), the interactive entertainment affiliate of The Walt Disney Co. is forming a new videogame development studio called Fall Line Studio dedicated to creating innovative games for Nintendo platforms. Jillianne K. Reinseth joins Studio B Prods. as director of development. She will head up Studio Bs new in-house content creation division, called the B-HIVE, and develop projects from external pitches as well.

Reinseth was a development producer with broadcaster Jetix Europe; senior manager, creative affairs at Walt Disney TV Animation; and also was manager, original series for ABC Cable Networks Group (Disney Channel).

Headline News Miyazaki Starts Next Film for Summer 2008

Hayao Miyazaki has started production on his latest untitled animated feature at his Studio Ghibli, reports VARIETY.

Scheduled for summer 2008, his last picture bowed in 2004 HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, which grossed $170 million in Japan alone and $225M internationally.

International and U.S. distributors have yet to be announced. Toho has handled all of Miyazaki's recent pictures.

Electronic Arts has acquired Digital Illusions CE (DICE), the development team and creators of the BATTLEFIELD game franchise. Stockholm, Sweden-based DICE becomes a fully integrated EA studio dedicated to growing the Battlefield franchise and developing new products for the PC, next generation consoles and other new platforms.

Headline News Saban Returns to Kids Roots

Haim Saban has launched a new venture to develop family programs, according to REUTERS.

Saban's L.A.-based private equity firm Saban Capital Group Inc. will form a virtual studio, employing freelance producers, writers and artists. The new company will fund global programming that can be exploited across different delivery systems, including video games, mobile devices and broadcast TV.

"I am thrilled to return to my roots and focus on developing media properties for children and families," Saban said in a statement.

WBTVG has tapped multi-award-winning producer and senior advertising exec Rich Rosenthal to head Studio 2.0.

Headline News Amy Pascal Named Co-Chair at Sony Pictures

Amy Pascal has been promoted to co-chairman of Sony Pictures Ent. (SPE) and has extended her deal with the studio to 2011.

In addition to her new title, Pascal will continue to serve in her role as chairman of the studio's Motion Picture Group. Michael Lynton, chairman/ceo of SPE, and the two will continue to report to Sir Howard Stringer, chairman/ceo of Sony Corp.
