Toon Boom Studio V2 Now Available

Toon Boom has released an upgrade to their Toon Boom Studio 2D animation solution for the Web. Like Version 1, the Toon Boom Studio V2 camera tool allows the user to approach the project cinematically, choreographing a production within the computer in a virtual 3D environment. Other upgrades in V2 include enhanced lip-synching tools and compatibility with Macromedia Flash MX, with a swf importer and the Toon Boom Studio Importer for Macromedia Flash MX.

The Museum Of Modern Art in New York presents a Cartoon Research screening May 17th and 18th. Featured in this exhibition are eleven of the best CinemaScope Hollywood cartoons of the 1950s and '60s. Toot Whistle Plunk & Boom, which won an Oscar, was Walt Disney's rejoinder to the success of United Productions of America (UPA), the upstart bicoastal studio that had introduced stylized graphic animation in counterpoint to the Disney studio's cartoon literalism. Toon Boom Studio Version 1.2 Now Available

Toon Boom Technologies has launched Toon Boom Studio version 1.2 optimized for Mac OS X version 10.1. For this release, Toon Boom Studio was re-tooled so that it can be localized for an international audience following the release of Toon Boom Studio v1.2j for the Japanese market in March 2002. This release also includes some improvements to the workflow. Toon Boom Studio's cinematic camera capabilities are part of a complete suite of drawing, coloring, sound editing and compositing tools, aimed at enabling animators to produce 2D animation for the Web and for broadcast.

B1 Media Leaps To Larger Studio, Expands Talent Base

Design studio B1 Media has moved its headquarters to a new facility in Studio City, California, more than doubling the size of its previous space, and has added several new staffers to its growing talent base. Previously partnered in multimedia company Barbed Wire, Joshua Hatton has moved to B1 as an animator involved in 2D and 3D animation and motion graphics working on DVD, broadcast design and games. Game producer Jason Friedlander joins B1 from MTV's ROAD RULES where he was responsible for developing and writing game competitions.

Pasi And Nelvana Produce Seven Little Monsters

pasi (philippine animation studio, inc.) and Canadian producer Nelvana have joined forces to produce 14 new episodes of the animated series, SEVEN LITTLE MONSTERS for the PBS Saturday morning kids block. Based on the book from childrens author Maurice Sendak, the series is all about life in a large family of brothers and sisters, who just happen to be monsters. SEVEN LITTLE MONSTERS is the third co-production between pasi and Nelvana to be covered under the recently ratified government sanctioned co-production treaty between the Philippines and Canada.

Robots Next For Blue Sky And Fox

With over $100M and counting after three weeks in theaters, Fox Animation and its Blue Sky Studios ICE AGE is a success and the studio has announced development on their next project, entitled ROBOTS, based on a childrens book by William Joyce. According to VARIETY, the studio has completed preliminary storyboarding and extensive visual development on the feature.

Studio B Debuts Two At Mip

Canadian animation house Studio B is heading to MIP TV this April with two new shows and 26 new second season episodes of both YVON OF THE YUKON and D'MYNA LEAGUES. Studio B says their new property INTO THE SHADOWS is a "safe scare" show a la SCOOBY DOO. The series is in development for the Family Channel with 26 x 11-minute episodes. The production company hopes to secure international pre-sales at MIPTV. Studio B will also debut the original series FLAKES, featuring "cerealebrities" living in a place called Breakfastown.

Di-O-Matic Puts A New Face On Character Modeling

Di-O-Matic's new facial modeling and animation tool Facial Studio for 3ds max 4.x is now shipping. With a regular price tag of US$699, Facial Studio is now available at the introductory price of US$499 until March 25, 2002. Facial Studio is a suite of plug-ins featuring more than 500 controls over the head creation process, allowing the user to deform anything from the facial features to the overall head shape including teeth and tongue, as well as controlling the shading, textures, wrinkles, deformations and muscle animation.

Final Round For Final Fantasy Team

The innovative studio that brought the synthespians of FINAL FANTASY to life, is planning to close up shop. Pressure from parent company Square Co., Ltd. of Tokyo is forcing Honolulu-based Square USA into closure, if they cannot find investors between now and March 31, 2002. Square Co. ceased funding of the studio in September, and although Square USA attempted to find partners in major U.S. studios, they have not been able to procure outside funding. Although the studio hopes an investor will appear in the 11th hour, a March 31st shut down seems inevitable.

International production and distribution giant TV-Loonland has again joined forces with German broadcaster ZDF for two new co-production ventures, SOMETHING ELSE and RUDI (working title). This partnership follows the previous TV-Loonland/ZDF co-production of the animated series PETTSON AND FINDUS and the upcoming LITTLE GHOSTS.

The beta release of Toon Boom Studio 1.1 for Mac OS X is now available. The latest version of Toon Boom Technologies 2D desktop application can now export animations as iMovie projects or add them to existing iMovie projects. This release also simplifies the workflow required to create an animated movie using Toon Boom Studio to draw and animate personalized characters and objects. The final release of Toon Boom Studio 1.1 will be available at the end of January 2002.

Artist-In-Residence, A Program For Animation Filmmakers

French animation production studio Folimage is announcing its 7th Artist-in-Residence program. Every year, Folimage Studio invites two international filmmakers to be in residence at the studio to make their short film. Film projects should be personal and original, 6-minutes long or less, and should not be part of a series. Projects will be chosen by a selection committee consisting of members from Canal + and Arte TV channels, CNC-National Cinematography Centre and NFB-National Film Board of Canada, among others.

Pepper's Ghost & Cambridge team To Distribute PG Studio

Pepper's Ghost Productions (PGP) has inked an agreement with Cambridge Animation Systems whereby Cambridge will be the exclusive worldwide distributor for PGP's production management software tool, PG Studio. PG Studio was developed by PGP to manage all facets of production for its 3D CGI properties. The software was an integral part of the award-winning television series, TINY PLANETS, which was co-produced with Sesame Workshop, and is already on air in Australia, sold to territories throughout the world, and with a U.K. version to be seen on CiTV in the spring of 2002.

Blur Brings Sci Fi’s Soulkeeper To Life

Blur Studio designed and produced more than 80 visual effects ranging from digital matte paintings to a fully rendered 3D creature for the new Sci Fi Channel series SOULKEEPER. One of the more challenging effects for the studio was a 10-foot reptilian creature with a particularly nasty disposition that battles the shows hero. A full-size animatronic was used during the production, but as it couldn't walk, computer graphics were relied on for the moving shots.

Blur Studio Returns To Wolfenstein Castle

Blur Studio has produced a computer-animated intro-movie video for Activisions RETURN TO WOLFENSTEIN CASTLE, the sequel to CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN 3D. The video, presenting the back story to the Wolfenstein saga, will be packaged with the game and will also screen in movie theaters worldwide in fall 2001 supporting the games launch. To accommodate theater screenings, Blur Studio produced the animation for the trailer at film resolution. They also incorporated a high degree of detail and fluid motion. One of the most distinctive features is its un-computer graphic look.
