2004 Feature Length FIlmmaking Program

Join this fantastic eight week summer program for high school, college and adult students. This will be our third and most ambitious program to date. We will be filming an entire feature length motion picture (the continued saga of Believe). Check out the picture gallery from our last two programs here.

You will join a group in a specific area of your interest and participate in the overall process of production. The five production groups are: Directors, Producers, Hair/ makeup/ wardrobe, Set Construction / Grip and Talent.

Congrats to Mike Gabriel (LORENZO) and Chris Landreth (RYAN) for recent their triumphs at Annecy. By now youve become very familiar with these highly imaginative and technically innovative animated shorts, thanks to VFXWORLDs timely coverage. Obviously both are must-sees. Meanwhile, later in the week, Henry Turner travels around world to discover the vfx wonders that lie within Disney and Walden Media's remake of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS.

Logan's Run Remake Starts Production In Fall

Director Bryan Singer's upcoming remake of MGM's 1976 science fiction drama, LOGAN'S RUN, is scheduled to start production in Vancouver in September, reports HOLLYWOOD NORTH REPORT. The production will be one of the first to shoot in the Canadian Motion Picture Park, a new 64,000-square-foot, four-stage complex in South Burnaby. Singer's production has booked studio space through September 2005. Ethan Gross and Paul Tadisco are writing the script based on William Nolan's novel. The story follows a police officer in a futuristic utopia, which kills its citizen at age 21.

The new Southwest Arts, Film & Television conference is offering a special section for HD production and has panels and exhibitors of interest to film & video professionals engaged in producing television programming for cable and broadcast, commercials for local and national audiences, feature films, corporate video production, documentaries, animation and special effects, infomercials and music videos. The conference runs June 4-6, 2004, at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas.

Marathon Gets First Look Deal From FKE

Fox Kids Europe N.V. (FKE) has signed an exclusive first look agreement with French animation studio Marathon, for its future childrens animated production output. Under the terms of the agreement, FKE and Marathon will co-develop and co-produce a minimum of three 52-episode series, adding at least 156 fresh, new, half-hour episodes to the programming lineup of FKEs pan- European network of channels.

Production Begins on Mexican Toon, Maya

This week marks the start of production on the Spanish-language feature MAYA, produced by actor Bruno Bichir and pop singer Emmanuel for Escarabajo Producciones. Ricardo Arnaiz will direct the $3 million budgeted film with animation supervision being handled by Mike Kunkel (TARZAN, HERCULES). Music will be supervised by Antonio Zepeda. Lending voice talent will be actor Andres Bustamante (TV's TELETON). The film is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2005.

IDT Acquiring Anime Giant Manga Ent.

IDT Ent. is going Japanaese, signing an agreement to acquire Manga Entertainment, a film company specializing in the production, distribution and worldwide marketing of anime for home video releases, theatrical and television broadcast. IDT Ent. is a subsidiary of IDT Corp. (www.idt.net) a multinational carrier, telephone and technology company based in Newark, New Jersey which has been on an amazing buying spree of animation companies and establishing creative asset partnerships.

Toon Boom Animation has launched Concerto, an animation software for paperless, digital, re-use or cutout animation production. Concerto offers studios increased productivity, raises animation quality and eliminates file management issues so common to the normal Flash pipeline.

Shuffle Names Bando Exec Producer

Shuffle Inc., an international television commercial production company with offices in Venice, California, and Tokyo, Japan, has named David Bando as its new exec producer.

In his new position, Bando will work with advertising agencies and Shuffle directors on the production of TV commercials worldwide. He will oversee all aspects of television show and TV commercial production, as well as post-production, and will also be responsible for the companys expansion and development of its TV commercial division and overall growth.

Academy Presents Production Design Seminar

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is presenting a four-part seminar examining the art of production design. The seminar will run every Wednesday at 7:00 pm for four weeks in the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study in Hollywood. Each session of "Production Design: Concept to Construction" will offer a detailed look at the production design process from the perspective of motion picture production designers themselves.

Taylor Climbs Production Ladder at Buena Vista Motion Pictures

Brigham Taylor has been promoted to svp of production, Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group, responsible for finding, developing, and overseeing the production of films under the Walt Disney and Touchstone Pictures banners.

"Brigham is a tremendous asset to our team," said Nina Jacobson, president of Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group, to whom he will continue report. "He knows good material when he sees it, and he's great with people. His contribution over the last year has been invaluable to the studio, the filmmakers and me."

Spectra Begins Production on Toopy and Binoo

Beginning in April, Spectra Animation will begin production on a new animated series titled, TOPPY AND BINOO. The 26x25 series is geared toward pre-schoolers and was developed and commissioned by Treehouse Original Prods. The series is set to air in September 2005.

Based on the successful book series by Dominique Jolin, who is participating the production the TV series, the story follows Toopy and his friends as they traverse Toppy's comical imaginary world. Dominique Mendal will produce with Raymond Lebrun and Nicolas Lemay directing.

MIP-TV News: Corsham & Mad House To Co-Produce Natural Born Kittens

U.K. production company Corsham Entertainment has agreed in principle to co-produce with Japanese anime production company Madhouse the 26x30 plus comedy/anime series for teens, NATURAL BORN KITTENS.

Corsham was founded by Oscar-winning STAR WARS producer Gary Kurtz and BIONICLE co-creator Alastair Swinnerton, while Madhouse is one of the top studios in Japan, with credits ranging from feature films NINJA SCROLL, METROPOLIS, VAMPIRE HUNTER D, ANIMATRIX, MILLENNIUM ACTRESS and TOKYO GODFATHERS to TV series CARDCAPTORS and BEYBLADE.

MIP-TV News: Year-Old Icon Animation Brings Flash Series to MIP-TV

Icon Animation will be bringing a full slate of animated projects to MIP-TV. The company hopes to secure distribution and co-production deals for its various series.

VITAMINIX (31x2) is Icon's first co-production with Digital y Cual. The series seeks to introduce the world of food and their vitamin and mineral content to adults and children. The Flash production is finished and available worldwide.

MIP-TV News: VGI Entertainment Brings 3 Pre-School Series to MIP-TV

VGI Entertainment Inc. will be presenting three pre-school series in its booth R28.13 at MIP-TV. The series include SERGEANT STRIPES, EBB AND FLO and BLANCHE.

Produced by Ealing Animation and A Works TV Production in association with CBBC, SERGEANT STRIPE (26x10) features Stripes, a police station cat, who dreams he is a police sergeant with his very own police force. VGI launched the new 2D series at MIPCOM 2003 and the show receives a 33% audience share across all channels kids4-6 year olds for the BBC.
