Kids' WB! 2003-2004 Season Premieres September 13

Kids' WB! kicks off its Saturday morning schedule on September 13, 2003 and its weekday lineup on September 15, with and unprecedented slate of returning to the 2003-2004 season. The network will also launch the "Kids WB! BIG, Really, Really BIG Sweepstakes," offering kids the chance to win one of hundreds of prizes.

Discovery Kids ups Rapsas to vp

Discovery Kids has appointed Jim Rapsas from director to vp of kids program development to develop and maintain programming for all of the Discovery Kids outlets, including the Disco Discovery Kids Channel, Discovery Kids Saturday morning block on NBC and the sponsor-free and commercial-free Ready Set Learn preschool block on TLC.

The six-year Discovery veteran has been responsible for such shows as TRADING SPACES: BOYS VS GIRLS, SCOUT'S SAFARI and ADVENTURE CAMP. Rapas created and exec produced STRANGE DAYS AT BLAKE HOLSEY HIGH.

Hybride used a range of Softimage systems to create animation and effects for the box-office topper SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER. The 100-person team at Hybride relied on the SOFTIMAGE|XSI product, SOFTIMAGE|XSI Batch and SOFTIMAGE|XSI BatchServe.

TroubleMaker & Janimation Use AMD Processor-Based Systems on Spy Kids 3D

TroubleMaker Studios and Janimation animators used AMD processors with hardware support from BOXX and NVIDIA, as well as software from Microsoft and Softimage on SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER. The third installment of Robert Rodriguez' highly successful family franchise features stereoscopic elements enhanced with 3D glasses.

Trading Spaces Offers Spy Kids Renovation Special

As a way of promoting the release of SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER on July 25, 2003, Discovery Kids on NBC will be airing a special kids edition of the TLC TV series TRADING SPACES, featuring SPY KIDS stars Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. Hitting the airwaves Saturday, July 19 from 11:00-11:30 am (ET)/9:00 -9:30 AM (PT), BOYS VS. GIRLS has Alexa joining 13-year-old Kali as she turns her brothers room into a spy-training obstacle course, featuring monkey bars, tire steps and a climbing wall. Daryl will team with Eli to change Kalis bedroom into a retro soda shop.

X-Men: Evolution Gets Third Season

Kids WB! has announced that the third season of X-MEN: EVOLUTION will debut on Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 10:30 am. The first new episode, entitled X23, follows Wolverine as he discovers that his DNA has been used to create a new Weapon X. Leading up to the new episode, Kids WB! will air a week full of must see episodes from the shows first two seasons, starting July 28, 2003 at 3:00 pm. The series is produced by Marvel Studios with Film Roman handling the animation.

Kids’ WB! Offers Spy Kids 3D Contest

Kids WB! and Dimension Films are teaming up for a new contest in connection with the release of SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER. The 2nd Annual Kids' WB! Way Outta The Way Road Trip Sweepstakes will kick off on Monday, July 14, 2003, and will give one grand prize winner the chance to drive home in an Isuzu Axiom SPY Mobile - delivered by the stars of the film, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara.

Liberty's Kids & Static Shock Up for Humantas Awards

Five animation writers are among the 41 scribes named finalists in seven categories for the 2003 HUMANITAS Prize. The writers, selected from a pool of 353 entries, will be competing for $105,000 in prize money to be handed out at the annual luncheon on July 10, 2003 at the Hilton Universal Hotel in Universal City, California. Competing for the $10,000 prize in the Children's Animation Category are:"Jimmy" episode of STATIC SHOCK- Teleplay by Dwayne McDuffie, story by Alan Burnett and Dwayne McDuffie (Warner Bros. Kids' WB! launched its new gaming site, Ribbit Arena, located at www.KidsWB.com on June 10, 2003. When kids log onto the site, they will be assigned to one of four teams where they can play a variety of exciting games and accumulate points for prizes they may download.

Dick Clark Starts Kids Generation

Dick Clark Productions is setting up a children's division, Dick Clark Kids, which already has an animated/live-action preschool series, THE CANBEES, scheduled for home video markets in 2004, according to VARIETY. Dick Clark's daughter, Cindy, and marketing exec Kelly Sole Holscher will acquire and develop projects for the kids arm located in Burbank, California. Holscher will also oversee marketing and distribution opportunities for Dick Clark Kids. The pair reports to Jules Haimovitz, vice chairman of DCP and coo Fran LaMaina.

Italy Double Dips Cartoon Channel Flavors From Turner

Italy will double its cartoon TV fun when boomerang launches on July 1, 2003 on sky italia. building on the success of its parent channel, cartoon network Italy, Boomerang will join the new sky italia line-up with a schedule of classics including TOM AND JERRY, YOGI BEAR, THE FLINTSTONES, POPEYE and THE PINK PANTHER.

Sony's Sorensen Relocates To National Geographic TV Kids

Tara Sorensen joins National Geographic Television & Films as VP of development on May 12, 2003 to oversee development and production of its kids' programming unit. She will be based in Beverly Hills, working closely with Friedman Meir, president of the Kids' Programming & Production Unit for NGT&F. The unit was established earlier in 2003 to develop and sell original programming to major U.S. cable and broadcast networks, as well as direct-to-video properties. The Kids' group is working with creators, production companies, studios, networks and corporate sponsors to develop projects with characters and storylines for the preschool to tween audiences.

Sorensen was vp of creative affairs for the Family Entertainment division of Sony Pictures Television, where she oversaw the development of shows like JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES and MEN IN BLACK animated series for Kids WB!, DRAGON TALES for PBS and the STUART LITTLE series for HBO Family. Sorensen was a development manger for Nelvana Communications, where she helped develop ROLIE POLIE OLIE for the Disney Channel.

New Astro Boy Series Coming To Kids' WB!

Kids' WB! plans to introduce a new generation of kids in the United States to one of the most beloved anime icons, ASTRO BOY, in its Saturday morning schedule in the 2003-2004 season. Sony Pictures Television and Tezuka Productions are producing the new series based on the original 50-year-old toon from Manga master, Osamu Tezuka.

Nickelodeon-Branded Milk Enrolled For School

In response to recent attention surrounding childhood obesity and lack of nutrition in school lunch programs, Nickelodeon and East Side Entrees have partnered to offer Nickelodeon-branded milk in school lunches nationwide starting in September 2003. The first character-licensed milk to be distributed nationally in schools, the milk cartons will display images from JIMMY NEUTRON, ROCKET POWER, THE WILD THORNBERRYS and SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS. Flavored nutritionally fortified packaged milk products will be for kids 6-11, and milkshakes will be available for kids 11-17.

Riverstreet & Blur Put On The Spots For Kids' WB!

Riverstreet Productions, a leader in creative television production, and Blur Studio, the Santa Monica, California-based computer animation and visual effects studio, have teamed up again to develop an image campaign for the Kids' WB! 2002-2003 season. For the fifth consecutive year, Kids' WB! tapped Riverstreet Productions to develop the network's branding and ID campaign. The ongoing creative collaboration between Kids' WB! and Riverstreet Productions has earned the companies 14 Promax Awards, including four Gold Muses and one Promax World Class Award. Blur Studio is on board again for the fourth year incorporating its irreverent creativity through computer animation, visual effects and post-production to help win several of the awards.

Studio B Bats First Hit Into U.S. Ballpark

Canadian animation Studio B Productions has hit one into the U.S. network ballpark, scoring a slot on Kids' WB! for a toon about baseball-playing birds that will debut in September 2003. This original production by Vancouver-based Studio B, features the adventures of a team of birds who barnstorm the circuit of D'MYNA LEAGUES playing baseball, and learn a lesson or two along the way. "We're very excited to break into the U.S. with the first ever baseball cartoon series," says Blair Peters, creator and executive producer. "I think kids will really dig the unique combination of traditional 2D characters and 3D backgrounds that capture the exciting on-field action. And adults will get a kick out of the nostalgic tributes to the likes of Shoeless Joe Jackson, Harry Carey and Babe Ruth." D'MYNA LEAGUES already has a strong batting average in its home territory of Canada, with success on both CTV (it was the broadcaster's first venture into kids programming), and kids network YTV. The show, which is distributed by Sony Pictures Television International globally, also airs in territories from Venezuela to Singapore.

Entertainment Rights Increases Sales To North America

The UK's Entertainment Rights has chalked up a number of recent licenses for its kids properties resulting from MIP-TV, in Europe and in North America, via its New York City office. The NYC office has placed several shows with U.S. and Canadian networks. Discovery's Hispanic channel has acquired CGI preschooler CUBEEZ for a 2003 launch and HAMILTON MATTRESS has been sold to HBO while TeleQuebec in Canada has taken PRESTON PIG, SHORT CUTS and MERLIN THE MAGICAL PUPPY. ER's new boy action series TRANSFORMERS ARMADA debuted well on Carton Network in the U.S.

Sneak Peak & Superheroes Abound On Kids' WB! In May

Kids' WB! will offer a special sneak-peek of its new adventure series TEEN TITANS on May 3, 2003. The series, coming to Kids' WB!'s 2003-04 season, is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and will be offered in conjunction with Cartoon Network. TEEN TITANS features Robin The Boy Wonder (without Batman) and fellow teens Cyborg, Beast Boy, Starfire and Raven - five superheroes, each with special powers, who unite to form a defensive force to protect the Earth from a new generation of villains as well as the tribulations of being a teenager. An eclectic group, their powers complement each other while their personalities often clash. Discovering how to control their powers, these Teen Titans must learn to work and grow as a team despite their stylistic differences. The series is produced by WBA under the guidance of Glen Murakami and is based on the DC comic book series. The series will debut on Cartoon Network in August 2003 and re-launch on Kids' WB! in mid-season 2004.
