Die Hard 4 Director Free to Remake Escape From New York

New Line Cinema is in final talks with Len Wiseman (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) to direct its remake of John Carpenter's cult classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, reports the trades. 300 star Gerard Butler has already signed on as the new Snake Plissken. Neal Moritz is the producer.

Ken Nolan (BLACK HAWK DOWN) is adapting the script, which sees convict/ war hero Plissken sent into a futuristic Manhattan, which has been transformed into a maximum-security prison, to save the U.S. President after Air Force One is shot down by the inmates.

NewTek Releases LightWave Update

NewTek Inc. announced at SIGGRAPH 2007 in San Diego the availability of LightWave v9.3, the second in a series of free updates to the Emmy award-winning 3D application. LightWave v9.3 features a number of significant improvements, including the ability to render lines with photorealistic motion blur; two new sub-surface scattering shaders that are significantly faster than earlier shaders, and higher quality as well; various performance enhancements throughout the product; and numerous maintenance improvements.

Anyone who visits In Pictures' website at www.inpics.net/ can download any and all of its 22 different books for free, in Adobe PDF format. In the month since the site was launched, more than 20,000 people have visited it to download free books.

Taiwanese Fish Short Smiles at Berlin Film Fest

The Berlin International Film Festival wrapped up its festivities on Feb.18, 2006, with its awards ceremony, bestowing the animated Taiwanese short, WEI XIAO DER YU (A FISH WITH A SMILE), with the Special Prize of the Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk.

The 10-minute film was directed by C. Jay Shih, Alan Tuan and Poliang Lin. The winners will receive 2,500 euros.

2005 China International Cartoon and Digital Art Festival

The 2005 China International Cartoon and Digital Art Festival (http://www.cicdaf.com/english/index.asp) will be held in Changzhou, China, on September 28 to October 5, 2005.

Last year's edition drew crowds in excess of 130,000. Since then, the city has been designated by the Central Government as one of 9 new animation production centers, and it is estimated that 150,000 visitors will attend this year's event.

Also present at the show will be numerous production studios, schools, media organizations, and technology vendors and providers.

Battles, compromises and occasional victories will be described by a panel of veteran TV, feature and commercial directors, who know what really happens when artistic vision meets a blizzard of studio notes.
