VES Festival to Dovetail into eDIT 9.

The 8th Festival of Visual Effects presented by the Visual Effects Society (VES), to be held July 6-8, 2006, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, will include presentations of SUPERMAN RETURNS, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, CARS and SMALLVILLE. Workshops and panels dealing with the future dimensions of digital film processing will be lead by eight-times Oscar winner and VFX legend Dennis Muren and other celebrities, such as Robert Skotak, John Myhre and Mark Stetson.

New York Asian Film Festival 2006

The New York Asian Film Festival focuses on the best contemporary Asian movies. This year's festival will take place at the Anthology Film Archives and the ImaginAsian theater.

Already lined up is CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL (Japan, 2005) based on the best-selling manga. This high school movie follows the saga of filthy, lousy Cromartie High, a school so sucky that they even enroll gorillas, robots and Freddie Mercury. Only an invasion of space monkeys can bring this warring student body together.

The full line-up will be announced during the last week of April.

Banff World Television Festival Ends On A High Note

Wednesday, June 14, 2006, marked the close of another exceptional Banff World Television Festival, with more than 1,450 delegates in attendance, and a combined 1,700 delegates taking in both the television festival and its sister-event, nextMEDIAThe Future of Digital Content. With jam-packed panel and session rooms and a whirl of special events, the festival generated the signing and greenlighting of new deals, as well as the opportunity for delegates to turn their project ideas into reality.

Annecy Plays Pleasantly Along While MIFA Market Abuzz With New Shows

There were many films submitted to the latest Annecy animation festival, now running June 5-10, 2006, along with the MIFA market (June 7-9), in Annecy, France, and loads of screenings but many festival goers are in search of a film that really wows them. The films have been described as abstract, too long, lacking story with only a few, so far, gaining any note, and even those are not generally agreed upon.

Gaelle Denis' British short CITY PARADISE won Best Animation at the 37th Nashville Film Festival. Honorable mention in the toon category went to EMELIA THE FIVE YEAR OLD GOTH GIRL, by Derek Flood.

As for the Best College Student Animation, SHE SHE SHE SHE'S A BOMBSHELL, by Ben Levin took home the prize with Ramon Paris and Maria Castillos EL PAGUEY receiving an honorable mention.

Jungle Beat Wins at Sprockets

The 9th annual Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children announced its awards at the George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre at Ryerson University. Five awards were decided upon by childrens juries (three designated for feature films, two for shorts), two audience awards were determined by festivalgoers, four awards for Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase were decided by a jury of film industry professionals and one Students Choice Award was determined by high school students attending the festival.
