Robots Screening

Entertainment Technology Center at USC kicks off its 2005 Digital Screening series with the digital presentation of ROBOTS, followed by a Q&A with Bob Gordon, vp of production, Fox Animation. The event will take place at the Digital Cinema Laboratory at the historic Hollywood Pacific Theatre, 6433 Hollywood Blvd. at 7:00 pm. NAB2005 Announces Fourth Annual Digital Cinema Summit

NAB is joining forces again with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the Ent. Technology Center at USC (ETC-USC) to present the fourth annual Digital Cinema Summit. The two days of speakers, panels and new product announcements center on the now complete Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) specifications; the issues faced in implementing them through SMPTE standards; and the impact of digital cinema on entertainment, technology and theatrical exhibition worldwide. The Digital Cinema Summit will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, April 16 and 17, 2005.

Glotzer Upped to Fox Filmed Ent. Digital Media

Fox Filmed Entertainment (FFE) has promoted Matthew Glotzer to the newly created post of vp, digital media, responsible for developing content distribution opportunities across a wide range of new and emerging technology platforms, as well as actively pursuing long-term initiatives with major IT, consumer electronics and telecommunications companies. He reports to digital media president, Peter Levinsohn and will work closely with the Fox Filmed Ent. Groups strategic planning, engineering, content protection and distribution groups.

The Gnomon Workshop, in conjunction with Design Studio Press, has released two new training DVDs by renowned matte painter and concept designer Christian Lorenz Scheurer. Utilizing Adobe Photoshop, Lorenz Scheurer shares his techniques for executing high-concept painting, including architecture, vehicles and characters.

Lucas and Cameron to Showcase Digital 3D at ShoWest

Texas Instruments will unveil a glimpse of its future plans for digital cinema and 3D movies at ShoWest, the annual convention for movie exhibitors, March 14 -17, 2005, in Las Vegas. TI has planned what it considers a landmark demonstration with STAR WARS creator George Lucas and TITANIC director James Cameron on March 17 at 11:30 am to showcase 3D theatrical entertainment with TIs DLP Cinema technology. TI will for the fourth consecutive year serve as the corporate sponsor of ShoWest.

The Foundry Helps Tune The Piano with OpenFX

Leading visual effects developer, The Foundry, announced the completion of the first OpenFX project: the indie feature THE PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES, due for release in November. An open API for visual effects software, OpenFX has been used on the film in conjunction with FilmLights Baselight grading and finishing system by German vfx facility, Optical Art.

The Ultimate Fifth Element on DVD

Luc Bessons dazzling THE FIFTH ELEMENT, already a reference quality Superbit DVD, has been upgraded to the Ultimate Edition (Columbia TriStar Home Ent., $24.96). Its hard to believe that this is the first edition to contain supplemental features, but they provide plenty of context and perspective to all that wonderful eye candy and sci-fi hokum from Besson and French comic book artists Jean-Claude Mézières and Mobius.

SMPTE Seminar 2005, presented in cooperation with the Entertainment Technology Center at USC and USC School of Cinema-Television, has been rescheduled for March 4-5, 2005. Originally the event was to run in December 2004, but was postponed due to the logistics of the holidays.

iO Film Promotes Evan Edelist

iO Film, a technologically advanced, full-service digital film finishing facility specializing in film and video projects, has promoted Evan Edelist from svp/development to gm/evp. Edelist will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility, overseeing production, scheduling and sales.

He will also help design the companys new 26,000-square-foot Hollywood facility, slated for a summer 2005 movie-in, working closely with iO Films cto Kevin Mullican.
