Viewpoint Creative Redesigns Discovery Channel Logo

Discovery Channel turned to Boston and Los Angeles-based creative agency Viewpoint Creative to develop a revitalized logo and on-air identity that would leverage the equity of its signature "globe" icon and tap into the immersive quality of the brand.

Discovery Channel unwrapped the new logo and on-air look during the season premiere of DEADLIEST CATCH, the network's highest-rated series, which returned for its fourth season on April 15.

Animator And Director Andy Knight Dies

Veteran animator and director Andy Knight died last week, according to Cartoon Brew and several other blog sites.

Knight, 46, died of a stroke on April 10. He co-founded Toronto animation studio Red Rover in 1994 and had an extensive career in Europe and Canada.

A Facebook page has been set up to collect memories of Knight from his friends and family.

Gnomon Workshop DVD Releases

The Gnomon Workshop released two new titles this week on their Creative Production Pipeline covering character design and matte painting.

Artists Thierry Doizon (aka BARONTiERi) and Sebastien Larroude (aka Rainart) reveal their techniques using a myriad of tools including PhotoShop, Maya, ZBrush and Fusion.

The two new titles delve into the broad expanse of the creative process, from getting creative, researching, working as a team all the way through lighting effects and color correction.

New Promotions At Taffy Entertainment

Taffy Entertainment, the worldwide distribution and brand management arm of the MoonScoop Group, announced Monday staff promotions in its consumer products and marketing group.

David DiLorenzo will now serve as Vice President of consumer products and marketing, responsible for all of Taffy Entertainments North American consumer products and marketing activities.

He will focus on the U.S. market while Cynthia Money, President of worldwide consumer products and marketing will devote more time to the growing overseas markets.

John A. Marley Launches Indie Prod Co

BBC, Disney UK and Cartoon Network veteran John A. Marley is launching Archie Productions, an independent production company that will develop and produce creative intellectual property for both broadcast and digital media. As creative director, Marley will originate and produce his own shows while actively seeking innovative partnerships with other creative talent. Archie Productions currently has an active development slate of properties across kids, entertainment and factual entertainment.

MTV Names Frontini for Latin Post

Viacom's MTV Networks Argentina has appointed Juan Frontini Creative Director of MTV Latin America. The appointment is part of MTV Networks Latin America's strategy to regionalize and expand its programming and production operations locally. Based in Buenos Aires, Frontini will report to Sean Saylor, Vice President of Creative for MTV and VH1 Latin America, based in Miami Florida.

Battlestar Galactica & Nightmares Take VFX Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Atmosphere Visual Effects took home the Emmy for "Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series" for SCI FI Channel's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NBC Universal) season three episode: "Exodus, Part 2." The award was presented Saturday night (Sept. 8) at the Creative Arts Primetime Emmys as part of the 59th Emmy Awards presentation at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A.

In addition, Stargate Digital won for "Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special" for BATTLEGROUND (NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES: FROM THE STORIES OF STEPHEN KING).

Cake Editorial Launches Pi for VFX

Santa Monica-based Cake Editorial has launched Pi, a new visual effects, graphic design and 2D/3D animation division led by creative director Josh Kirschenbaum.

In addition, Pi has added visual effects artist Brian Dickett, who comes to Pi following a freelance career that included an extensive stint at Outpost Digital, Los Angeles, where he worked on recent projects for GM and the Tennis Channel.
