Indian and Malaysian Studios to Launch Two Kids Channels

UTV Software Communications Ltd. of India has announced a joint venture with the Malaysia-based Astro, a DTH and pay TV operator, to create two new channels in the region, reports the BUSINESS STANDARD. UTV will handle the content, marketing and brand building with the capital investment coming entirely from Astro. UTV will receive nearly $1 million a year as well as an option to invest up to 20% equity in the channel at par over three years.

ITV Set to Launch Kids Network

Five years in the making leading U.K. commercial broadcaster ITV is now set to launch of a kids network, reports VARIETY.

The digital channel will be available on all platforms including Freeview, the free-to-air digital service backed by the BBC and BSkyB. Debuting within the next six months, the channel will offer a combination of existing programming, new commissions and acquisitions.

Sundance Channel Acquires BBC’s I Am Not An Animal Animated Series

Sundance Channel has acquired U.S. television rights to the BBC animated series, I AM NOT AN ANIMAL, a satirical, animated comedy that follows the adventures of a group of talking animals suddenly forced to fend for themselves in the outside world. The series will premiere on Oct. 5, 2005, at 11:00 pm and air Wednesday nights at 11:00 pm through November 9. It will also repeat on Thursdays at 6:00 pm, Fridays at 11:00 pm, Saturdays at 8:30 pm and Tuesdays at 8:30 pm.

Tripping the Rift Returns to SCI FI Wednesday

New episodes of TRIPPING THE RIFT will begin July 27, 2005, as part of SCI FI Channels SCI FI Wednesday lineup. Airing at 10:00 pm, the season 2 premiere has the Jupiter 42 crew commandeering some valuable booty on a disabled space truck and sets a course for the all-gay planet Fabulous Heaven to unload their spoils. On Fabulous Heaven, much to the crew's surprise, heterosexual relations are punishable by death. When Chode and Six are caught in a compromising position, the planet's closeted heterosexual statesman, Governor McJersey, has the duo sentenced to a public execution.

SCI FI Channel Catches Firefly

FIREFLY, the critically-acclaimed space western from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER creator Joss Whedon and Twentieth Television, is re-ignited on SCI FI. The channel will present the action adventure series 14 episodes, including three previously unaired in order, beginning July 22 at 7:00 pm. The show will lead into SCI FI's successful SCI FI Friday lineup.

Though short-lived, FIREFLY earned a devoted following which has resulted in the upcoming feature film SERENITY from Universal Pictures, slated for theatrical release on Sept. 30, 2005.

SCI FI Channel will start production on the two-hour pilot movie EUREKA on British Columbia's Vancouver Island. Nickelodeon Returning to Germany

MIP-TV attendees, especially German broadcasters, were speculating on MTV Networks Europe (MTVNE) recent announcement that it will launch a Nickelodeon kids' channel and website in Germany Sept. 12, 2005, as part of the company's commitment to providing high quality, complementary programming on its four channels in the market. A new cross-brand advertising sales house, Viacom Brand Solutions, has been created to market the portfolio of channels.

Disney Channel Picks Up 2nd Season of Higglytown Heroes

Disney Channel has ordered a second season of San Francisco's Wild Brain Prods. the learning-focused Playhouse Disney hit HIGGLYTOWN HEROES, a CG-animated, song-filled series. In 2004, the show (daily, 8:00 a.m.) was the second highest rated original Playhouse Disney series, averaging a 3.7 rating among kids 2-5.

Ex-Disney TV Intl chief David Hulbert has found a lovely new home to head as chief exec of Hallmark International Channel network. The network itself is taking up a new home with Sparrowhawk, the media group that is in the process with Providence Equity Partners and 3i of buying the Hallmark Intl Channel from Crown Media Holdings.

The Hallmark International Channel network has more than 60 million subscribers worldwide, the international rights to more than 580 titles in the Crown Media library and a state-of-the-art broadcast facility in Denver, Colorado.

SCI FI Channel has renewed BATTLESTAR GALACTICA for a second season. The critically-acclaimed show has been a ratings powerhouse catapulting SCI FI to the top spot in cable among P25-54 for five consecutive Fridays. With an order for 20 episodes, BATTLESTAR will begin production in Vancouver in March for a summer premiere, returning as the anchor of the channel's SCI FI Friday block of primetime original series.

Sara Mullock has been appointed the new producer for the Channel 4/NMPFT Animator in Residence Scheme.

The scheme offers emerging animators the chance to develop their own original idea for a short film in the specially designed booth in the animation gallery at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television. Their proposal will be presented to Channel 4, which will consider a full commission of the final production. Mullock will support each animator and help them develop their work.
