Cartoon Network Offers Five New Series

Cartoon Network claims it will broadcast more new episodes than ever before in its 11-year history more than 500 new half-hours, including five new animated series, new episodes of returning original series and new acquisitions. The new schedule was unveiled Feb. 25, 2004 at Cartoon Network's Upfront presentation to advertising executives and the media in New York City, during its pitch for on-air advertising buys.

Cartoon Network and Take-Two Sign Gaming Deal

Cartoon Network and Take-Two Licensing have announced a long-term partnership giving Take-Two "first look" rights to publish and distribute videogames based on Cartoon Network properties targeted to kids ages 6-11. As part of the deal, Cartoon Network will present new properties to Take-Two at the earliest stages of series development.

Animation professionals from all over Europe will congregate for the next Cartoon Creativity, a seminar organized by Cartoon, with the support of the Media Programme of the European Union. For three intensive days, attendees will be able to work on the creative development of a TV series, and get a feel for the commercial demands of the international market.

CARTOON MOVIE Tribute Noms Announced

CARTOON MOVIE, the only event dedicated to promoting European animated feature films, has announced the nominated companies for the Cartoon Movie Tributes 2004. These tributes highlight the initiatives that contribute to the recognition and the success of the European animation cinema. Three of them will be chosen by the professionals attending the event.

The nominated companies are:

Kids Programming Vet Cahn Joins Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network lost a kids programming vp when Linda Simensky migrated to PBS late in 2003, and has since gained a former PBS kids programming alum. Alice Cahn has been named vp of development for Cartoon Network's kids businesses, focusing on original entertainment programming for children ages 4-7, and will work with the company's online, marketing, ad sales and licensing teams to expand Cartoon Network's youth-targeted business off-air.

Las Vegas Comic-Con Launches New Toon Festival

Las Vegas Comic-Con, in association with cartoonmogul.com, will be hosting The Big Cartoon Exhibition 2004, October 29-31, 2004, during the three-day multimedia event. Comic-Con's mission is to provide a venue to showcase independent animators from around the world.

The event is seeking animated film submissions, no time restrictions, in all genre categories (traditional, computer graphic, Flash, stop-motion, experimental). The Big Cartoon Exhibition will be a non-competitive showcase and the deadline for entries is July 9, 2004.

Cartoon Movie Extends Registration Deadline

Cartoon Movie has extended its registration deadline to February 6, 2004. If one is interested in attending, they must fax a completed registration form by that date. JAK Cartoon Exhibit

U.K. artist JAK presents her whimsical creations in a debut exhibition. Amongst the animated gang, is a delightfully dim-witted family called, THE FOGWITS. JAK will be showcasing four original storybook ideas in addition to her cartoon oils on canvas, 3D clay models and a variety of digital prints and storyboards. Admission is free. The exhibition is located at the Cooper Brook Gallery, 60 East 4th Street.

Gundam Seed & Detective Conan Come to Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network is set to air anime series GUNDAM SEED and DETECTIVE CONAN, beginning in April.

The latest GUNDAM anime series will air on its weekend Action Block. GUNDAM SEED's appearance on the Cartoon Network will roughly coincide with the release of the first volume of the GUNDAM SEED manga from Del Rey on April 30. The series was a huge hit in Japan, where it brought the GUNDAM franchise back to the top of the TV ratings and stimulated tie-in merchandise sales. Rights holder Bandai America plans a huge new line-up of GUNDAM toys to roll out in 2004 as well.

6th edition of Cartoon Movie Coming in March

The 6th edition of Cartoon Movie will be held March 11-13, 2004, at Babelsberg fx.Center, in Potsdam, Germany. The unique event to support and promote European animation filmmakers is organized by the European Association of Animation Film, CARTOON (in collaboration with NFP Teleart in Germany), with the support of MEDIA Programme of the European Union and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH. The intimate conference is for professionals involved in the financing, production, distribution or the exploitation of feature films.

Witch Hunter Robin Joins Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim

Cartoon Network has added the gothic anime series, WITCH HUNTER ROBIN, to its Adult Swim lineup. Beginning Feb. 16, 2004, the show will air Monday-Thursday at midnight.

Set in present-day Japan where witches abuse their supernatural powers, a special team, lead by the flame conjurer Robin, hunts this new threat with a blend of technology, forensic science and supernatural powers. The series is directed by animé veteran Shukou Murase, who served as character designer for GUNDAM WING and ARGENTOSOMA.

Simensky to Leave Cartoon Network for PBS

AWN has confirmed that Cartoon Network vp of original animation Linda Simensky has announced to the company that she will be leaving her post to join PBS Kids. Simensky is an eight -year veteran at Cartoon Net, having been a major part in sheparding some of the channel's key brands, including the POWERPUFF GIRLS. Before arriving at Cartoon Network, Simensky was the first director of animation at Nickelodeon. She also founded the New York chapter of Women in Animation.

Cartoon Network Kicks Off Shocktober With Jacked Up Halloween

Cartoon Network will kick-off its month-long Shocktober celebration with an original half-hour special featuring the cast of THE GRIM ADVENTURES OF BILLY AND MANDY, entitled "Jacked Up Halloween." The special will first air on Oct. 1, 2003 at 8:00 pm with an encore on Oct. 30, at 8:00 pm. Together, Billy, Mandy and the Grim Reaper deal with typical suburban challenges -- school, family, and dispatching unwanted visitors from the spirit world.

Sans Queue Ni Tête Wins 2003 Cartoon D’Or At Cartoon Forum

The 2003 Cartoon dOr has been awarded to Sandra Desmazières for her first short film, SANS QUEUE NI TÊTE. It had already received the Prize Gaston Roche at the Espinho Festival 2002. Produced in the framework of ENSAD (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs), the film, made of animated painting, relates a nonsensical and absurd day where boredom and routine mingle.
