2nd Annual Hypefest Doubles Attendance

HypeFest, the 2nd annual unique festival that links independent ideas with commercial creativity, concluded its weekend-long screenings and festivities with an awards show and partying to the sounds of DJ Starskee Suavé. The festival took place July 24-25, 2004 at the CineSpace in Hollywood and showcased approximately 75 original short-subject works from filmmakers around the world, with attendance double that of the inaugural festival organizers said.

Disney's Lorenzo takes Grand Prix at Annecy

The coveted short film grand prize at the 28th International Festival of Animated Film at Annecy went to Mike Gabriel for LORENZO while Chris Landreth received the Special Jury Award for RYAN. The judges selected the 2D film over the 3D film for the top prize, wishing to recognize "true magic does not rely on technology and can start with the artist's hand-drawn art." The awards were presented at the closing ceremony held on Saturday, June 12, 2004 in Annecy, France. Congratulations to all the winners!

The NAB ICE Award is an honor bestowed by industry leaders to the best and brightest artists in the digital media arena. It is designed to recognize those who stretch their creativity to the limit and craft outstanding works. Those who are considered could be independent filmmakers or represent entertainment media giants. They could come from large authoring houses or be private videographers. Artists from the ranks of ad agencies, corporate communications, publishers, museums and academia are all eligible to compete.

MacWorld Awards 2004

The MacWorld Awards celebrates the best work made using Mac technologies. This year's event will be held at The Ex-Saatchi Gallery, London. This year MacWorld has introduced a new category -- Creative Choice, an award is for the best creative use of Mac compatible products. These nominations can be for any sector, for example audio, video, design, print, and entertainment. The award nominees will be decided by a panel of MacWorld judges, and will be judged on individual merit. The nominees will be decided by the end of April 2004. Stuttgart Announces Winners

The 12th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film 2004 (April 1-6, 2004) has broken the attendance record of the last festival with more than 40,000 attendees. The closing events were completely sold out. 500 films were screened at four venues over the six days. Adding to its international acclaim, TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE took home the feature prize.

Anima 2004 / Brussels Announces Winners

Anima 2004, the 23rd Animation Festival drew to a close on February 29, 2004 in Brussels with an Awards ceremony for Anima 2004's national and international competition. This was the first time Anima organized an international competition for both short and feature films. The award-winners were chosen by the public, via attendance and voting at the official competition screenings.

Game Develolpers Choice Awards Announce Special Honorees

The International Game Developers Assoc. (IGDA) announced the six gaming professionals receiving special honors at the 4th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards for contributions invaluable to the evolution of interactive entertainment. The founders of PopCap Games will receive the IGDA's newest honor, the Maverick award; game music pioneer Masaya Matsuura will receive the First Penguin award; and BioWare CEOs Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will be acknowledged for Community Contribution.

Triplets Takes Lumiere Award, Krumpet Nabs Comedy Prize

THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE took home the top French film award at the Lumiere Awards, France's equivalent to the Golden Globes. The event took place on Feb. 17, 2004. BAFTA Crowns King

BAFTA presented the winners of the 2004 Orange British Academy Film Awards on Feb. 15, 2004 with THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING taking home the prize for Best Film. VFX Pioneer Awarded ASC President's Award

Howard Anderson Jr., ASC received the American Society of Cinematographer's Presidents Award at the 18th annual Awards dinner, Feb. 8, 2004, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. This tribute is presented annually to an individual who has made unique contributions to the art form. Anderson is a visual effects pioneer who has earned several Oscar nominations, but is best known for his work on the classic television series I LOVE LUCY and STAR TREK. Anderson is a second-generation filmmaker. His father, Howard Anderson, began his career in Hollywood in 1919.

First BBC Four World Cinema Award Goes to Triplets

On Jan. 25, 2004, BBC Four handled out its first World Cinema Award for best foreign-language film released in the past year in the U.K. The French animated film, TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE, directed by first-time feature director Sylvain Chomet, beat out all other contenders, including Hayao Miyazaki's SPIRITED AWAY, to take home the prize. The other nominees included live-action flicks: CITY OF GOD, TO BE AND TO HAVE, GOOD BYE, LENIN! and THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST.

Big Chip Award Goes to Dr. Who

The 6th annual Big Chip Awards, the digital awards for North-West England, were handed out on Jan. 22, 2004 at the New Century Hall New Century House in Manchester. Cosgrove Hall took home the prize for Best Digital Animation for DOCTOR WHO: The Scream of the Shalka commissioned by and produced for BBCi. The 85-minute series is available to watch on the BBCi Website (www.bbc.co.uk/cult) and was produced to coincide with the Doctors 40th Anniversary.

Peter D. Parks, one of the industry's foremost microphotographers, has been voted the Gordon E. Sawyer Award by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Annies Announce Full List of Juried Awards

ASIFA-Hollywood has released the full list of juried award winners for the 2004 Annie Awards. In addition to Gene Deitch who we reported on Dec. 16, 2003 would receive the Winsor McCay Award, the other winners include Walt Disney designer John Hench and Tony the Tiger voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft.

Gene Deitch to Receive Winsor McCay Award at Annies

The board of directors of ASIFA-Hollywood has selected Gene Deitch to be one of the recipients of its prestigious Winsor McCay Award. Each year a Winsor McCay Award is awarded to a maximum of three individuals in recognition of lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation in producing, directing, animating, design, writing, voice acting, sound and sound effects, technical work, music, professional teaching or for other endeavors which exhibit outstanding contributions to excellence in animation.

Robbie the Reindeer Nabs International Emmy Award

On November 24, 2003 in New York City, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the winners of the 31st Annual International Emmy Awards. The BBC was the big winner of the night taking home three awards, including the Children & Young People Award for the newest Robbie the Reindeer adventure, LEGEND OF THE LOST TRIBE. The project was co-production between BBC Bristol and Comic Relief.

Angelus Awards Announced

The Angelus Awards Student Film Festival announced the winners of its 8th annual student film competition. Winning films screened at the awards ceremony on October 25 at the Directors Guild of America. A special tribute and SPIRIT OF ANGELUS award were given posthumously to Academy-Award winner Gregory Peck, which was presented to his wife, Vèronique Peck. Twenty-one college and graduate level film students were selected as finalists from a record 472 entries worldwide.
