MIFF-Milan International Film Festival

Again this year, MIFF will merge Milanese fashion, the movie business and Italian night-life. Last year the audience increased 100% from MIFF 2001. The 2002 best film prize was given to SHOWBOY, which subsequently was purchased by Regent Entertainment and will be released in North America September 2003. Now in its 4th year, MIFF 2003 is the premier international film festival in Milan, capturing the cultural diversity of the world of filmmaking and provides filmmakers with an avenue of exposure to the film community.

Animation Writer Mark Evanier Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Animation Writers Caucus of the Writers Guild of America, west (WGAw) will present its sixth annual Animation Writing Award to Mark Evanier at its annual reception, October 23, 2003, at 7:00 pm at 7000 West Third St. in Los Angeles.

There have been significant advancements in the two-plus decades since Mark first made his entrance into the field of animation, said Victoria Riskin, WGAw. His contributions as a writer and advocate for the medium are immeasurable. This award recognizes those achievements.

ShowEast Sees Brother Bear Premiere

ShowEast, the conference for movie theater owners and operators, wrapped up its 19th year in Orlando on October 2, 2003. The big news for the animation community was the premiere of Disneys next 2D animated feature BROTHER BEAR, which hits theaters on November 1, 2003. As well, Warner Bros. started its major push to promote its upcoming LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION, which arrives on November 14.

Shark Awards For Animation Goes to Framestore

The 41st Shark Awards at Kinsale took place on September 13, 2003. Framestore CFC landed both the Best Animation award for Audis DRINK LIKE A FISH and the Best Production/Special Effects award for Johnnie Walkers FISH. This follows up Framestores win last year for Best Post-Production on Levi's ODYSSEY spot.

First Hypefest Jams Screenings and Fun Awards

The inaugural HypeFest, a new festival launched July 26 - July 27, 2003 at CineSpace in Hollywood to unite and showcase independent filmmakers with commercial communities, concluded its weekend-long screenings and festivities with an awards show and live performance by the band Camper Van Beethoven. More than 80 original short-subject works from filmmakers around the world were screened amongst the many mixers and networking opportunities.

Annecy 2003 Award Winners

The coveted short film grand prize at the 27th International Festival of Animated Film at Annecy went to Koji Yamamura's ATAMA YAMA, while Serge Elissalde's VERTE was honored with the grand prize for Best TV Animation Production. 295 films were screened in the "Annecy 2003" official selection. The awards were presented at the closing ceremony held on Saturday, June 7, 2003. Congratulations to all the winners!

WorldFest Honors Best In Indie Animation

The 36th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival has released its results. The festival is dedicated to independent features and short films, with more than 25,000 in attendance this year. Highlights of the 10-day event included indie panels, a sailing regatta and Texas BBQ at the Houston Yacht Club. HFF "Kronrad Wolf" Productions took home three separate prizes on April 12, 2003 for their films ROCKS, MOUSE and GROSSENWAHN. Georg Gruber's ROCKS and Martina Liebritz's GROSSENWAHN took home the only Platinum awards given for animation. However, the prestigious Vancouver Film School took home the most awards with six, including one gold, two silver and three bronze. Three of those prizes went to Harmony Rowand alone for the films HEARTBEAT, DR. VOODOO and SAVAGE SUPERMARKET. In animation related wins, Ray Pointer and his Inkwell Studios also took home three awards: a platinum prize for MAX FLEISCHER'S KO-KO SONG CAR-TUNES as well as gold awards for MAX FLEISCHER'S FAMOUS OUT OF THE INKWELL and FIRST SOUND OF MOVIES documentaries. International 3D Awards Winners Announced

Winners for the 1st Annual International 3D Awards were announced at the evening ceremony May 9, 2003 at the Bella Center in Copenhagen, Denmark, running in conjunction with the 3D Festival 2003. Russo Wins Golden Gate Animation Award

Animator David Russo won the $1,500 Golden Gate Award for best animated short for his film, PAN WITH US, in the 46th Annual San Francisco International Film Festival awarded April 30, 2003 at the Castro Theatre. The festival drew a record 94,500-plus attendants up 5% from last year to its 200 films from 46 countries. To check out all the results and winners go to www.sffs.org.

Rush Your Entries to Soho Short Film Festival

The Rushes Soho Short Film Festival, to be held in London July 26-August 1, 2003, is accepting submissions for the following categories: The Short Film Award, The Newcomer Award, The Title Sequences & Idents Award, The Animated Short Award and The Music Video Award. The film should be no longer than 12 minutes in duration and produced in the last 12 months, up until May 6, 2003. The six-day festival screens the shortlisted films for free throughout Soho's cafes, bars and cinemas, culminating with the awards ceremony on July 31, 2003.

Call For Siggraph Award Nominees

The ACM SIGGRAPH Awards program recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the computer graphics community through their research, teaching, service or writing. At SIGGRAPH 2003 the Steven A. Coons Award, the Computer Graphics Achievement Award and the Significant New Researcher Award will be presented. The Steven Anson Coons Award for Outstanding Creative Contributions to Computer Graphics recognizes long-term creative impact on the field of computer graphics through a personal commitment over an extended period of time.

Jeffrey Katzenberg To Receive Hollywood Animation Award

DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg will be the first recipient of the newly established "Tex Avery Animation Award" at the 2002 Hollywood Film Festival, to be held in October in Hollywood, California. The award is named for legendary animator Tex Avery, who began his animation career in 1932 at Walter Lantz and went on to work at Warner Bros., MGM and Hanna Barbera. The award will be presented annually to honor an individual or group who have nurtured and advanced the art form of animation through outstanding contributions in the creative and/or technical arenas.

Jury Scans Barcode For Grand Prize At Annecy

The coveted short film grand prize at the 26th International Festival of Animated Film at Annecy went to Adriaan Lokman's CG short BARCODE, while Barry Purves' animated comedy drama HAMILTON MATTRESS was honored with the grand prize for Best TV Animation Program. 245 films were screened in the "Annecy 2002" official selection, coming from 33 countries, with more than 200 films premiering at the festival. The awards were presented at the closing ceremony held on Saturday, June 8, 2002. Congratulations to all the winners!

National Cartoonists Society Honors Jerry Scott

Jerry Scott, co-creator of the ZITS and BABY BLUES comic strips, has won the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) 2001 Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year. The "Oscar of cartooning" was presented at a black tie gala during the 56th Annual Reuben Awards Weekend, held this year in Cancun, Mexico. The Reuben Award, given by the NCS each year for exemplary cartoon work created in the previous year, was designed by and named after the NCS' first president, Rube Goldberg. In addition, cartoonists in various professional divisions were also honored with special plaques for excellence.

Pixar To Receive PGA Vanguard Award

Pixar Animation Studios will be honored with the Producers Guild of Americas (PGA) inaugural Vanguard Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in new media and technology. The PGA cited Pixars significant contributions in the field of computer graphic imaging (CGI) technology since its inception 15 years ago. Pixar created the first full-length computer animated feature film, 1995s TOY STORY and their RenderMan software propelled computer graphics into mainstream movie-making by allowing computer generated images to blend in seamlessly with live-action scenes.

Critics Say Yes To Shrek

DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg was on hand January 22, 2002 to pick up SHREKs Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) award for best animated feature, besting runner up MONSTERS, INC. The winners had been previously announced. SHREK has garnered virtually every critics award in the animated feature category so far this year, with the exception of the New York Film Critics Circle, who gave the nod to WAKING LIFE. Faith Hubley Dies at 77

Oscar-winning, independent animator Faith Hubley passed away in New Haven, Connecticut on Friday, December 7, 2001 of cancer. She was 77 years old. Hubley was a native of New York, where she and her husband John established Hubley Studio in 1955. Prior to Johns death in 1977, the Hubleys created 21 animated films together, including the Academy Award winners, HOLE, MOONBIRD and HERB ALPERT AND THE TIJUANA BRASS DOUBLE FEATURE. Faith Hubley collected many awards over her long career.

Clifford Wins A Cine Golden Eagle Award

Scholastic Productions' CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG has been awarded the Spring 2001 CINE Golden Eagle Award in the animation category. The series was honored for a two-part episode "To Catch A Bird/Best Party Ever" -- on the themes of having faith in friends and reaching out to those who have hurt you. The winning episodes were animated by Mike Young Productions.
