Disney Legend Maurice Noble Passes Away

Maurice J. Noble, co-director of the Academy Award-winning animated short subject DOT AND THE LINE and many other cartoon classics, died Friday, May 18, 2001. He was 91 years old. His unique and innovative use of color and design is apparent in landmark Disney films such as SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, BAMBI and DUMBO. His work on more than 60 Warner Bros. cartoons featuring characters such as Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner helped create a new look and approach to animation that continues to influence designers today.

The University of Washington is presenting a lecture by Leo Hourvitz, vice president for evangelism at Pulse3D. Hourvitz will discuss new methods, options and art forms in 3D-character animation for the Web. The event will be held in Room 108, in the Student Union Building on the UW campus at 4:30 pm. The lecture is sponsored by the Animation Research Labs and the Department of Computer Science & Engineering.

RMCAD and ASIFA-Colorado Present Edward Bakst, Award-Winning Animation Designer/Director

Edward Bakst is the international animation department chair at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design (RMCAD) and the founding president of ASIFA-Colorado. At the event, he will announce the upcoming ASIFA-Colorado events and guest speakers, present his own award-winning animation and discuss creative goals behind his work. He will also address objectives that animation professionals, students and the art community must strive for, and how these issues are vital to the local animation arena, commercial or independent. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at RMCAD. RSVP by May 14, 2001.

2001 Leo Awards Announced

The 2001 Leo Awards, a celebration of excellence in film and television held May 11-12, 2001 in Vancouver, Canada, has announced its winners. AAAGH! IT'S THE MR. HELL SHOW, directed by Christopher Brough and Jay Falconer, took home the Best Animation Series Award. Produced for the BBC by London, U.K.s Peafur Productions, AAAGH! IT'S THE MR. HELL SHOW recently won the Best Comedy Series Award at the Houston World Fest 2001. GREY AREAS - EPISODE 3 by Steve Sacks won the Leo Award for Best Direction/Storyboarding Of An Animation Program.

422 Ltd and Inkworks Bring Cel Look to 3D Animation Spots

Manchester, UKs 422 Ltd. used Cambridge Animation Systems' Inkworks software to achieve a traditional cel look in 3D for two recent projects. Mr. T is a 30-second commercial produced by Equinox Film & TV Productions and directed by Gary Cowan for the Accident Group, a compensation claims company. Mr. T was first modeled in Maya and prepared for animation using the software's set-driven keys and animation features. Once the pace of the animation was determined, Inkworks was used on the outlines and scenes were painted with the Maya renderer to achieve a cel look.

Tough Eye Festival

The Turku Animation School is hosting a new animation event entitled the Tough Eye Festival. The event will feature about 40 screenings and other art programs ranging from circus performance to music. There is one competition with one category for animation, the Timeless Competition. Any living animator can send one film, his or her best, for the competition. There are no limits concerning the date of premiere. Films must be independent productions and not exceed 30 minutes. Only 35 mm prints are screened, but for selection, video cassettes are accepted.

MTV has announced its 2001 slate of animated projects, which includes two green-lit animated comedy series and a full roster of other series in development. These shows represent the networks most ambitious move yet into the world of animation, teaming MTV with an A-list of writers, artists and producers. MTV Picks Up Film Roman’s Hairball

Leading independent animation production house Film Roman, Inc. announced on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, that one of its Web short, HAIRBALLS, has been picked up by MTV for development into a TV series. HAIRBALLS is an animated dark comedy with a satirical twist on the classic "cat and mouse" cartoon story. The Web toon was created by Doug Lawrence (REN AND STIMPY) and developed by Eric Radomski, creative head of animation and executive producer for Film Roman's Website, LEVEL13.NET. The short won an Honorable Mention at the 2000 Playboy Animation Contest and an Annie Award nomination in 2000.
