SAFO 01 Latest Update

SAFO, the Ottawa International Student Animation Festival (October18-21, 2001) has updated their Website with a workshop, seminar andpanel tentative schedule. The 1st Teacher's Symposium, a one-dayevent examining the state of animation education, will take onFriday, October 19, 2001. ASIFA Animation Art Auction

During the Annecy festival (June 4-9, 2001), ASIFA International will hold a silent auction of original animation art at the ASIFA booth. Featured animators include: Bill Plympton (MUTANT ALIENS, in competition this year), Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis (WHEN THE DAY BREAKS, Annecy grand prix 1999), Georges Schwizgebel (past Annecy juror and exhibition artist), Don Hertzfeldt (REJECTED, 2001 Oscar nominee, in panorama this year) and other brilliant animators. All proceeds will go toward the ASIFA production fund to finance new animation collaborations by ASIFA members.

ASIFA-Hollywood Presents : Sex Wars In Animation, 1926

ASIFA-Hollywood is presenting another "old and strange" video presentation: sex wars in animation, 1926- 1950, hosted by Milton Knight. Sometimes romantic and sensual,, often violent, the show will present the best and worse of loving couples in cartoons, from America and elsewhere. The event will begin at 7:30 pm. The entry fee will be US$2 for members and $5 for non-members. Seating is limited.

Protest Wins The Charles Samu Award At ASIFA East

PROTEST, created by S.D. Katz, won the 2001 Charles Samu Award, an animation award that recognizes quality work made on substantive issues. Charles Samu, who was a key player in creating the Zagreb Animation Festival in the 70s, was a builder of cultural bridges for friendship and understanding through the universal language of animation. The Leo Dratfield Endowment at International Film Seminars, in association with ASIFA-EAST, has honored his memory each year following his death in 1988.

ASIFA-San Francisco's First Animation Book Fair

Lifetime Sports Teams Up With DMA Animation For Dancesport

DMA Animation created the broadcast design package for the Lifetime Network's new television franchise, DANCESPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS. The DanceSport event took place in Monaco, where the world's best dancers met for this international competition. DMA designed a rhythmic flowing show open to highlight the beauty and motion of the dancers. DMA's design package included an open, bumpers and lower thirds along with other ancillary graphic elements, using a combination of live action footage and CGI ribbons. Animation Celebration At WorldFest Houston Festival

The 34th annual WorldFest, The Houston International Film Festival, concluded on April 28, 2001. This year, the festival received more than 4,300 total entries, with all animation categories receiving over 30 entries each. Ray Pointer, president of Inkwell Images, Inc., received the Gold Award in the entertainment category for his documentary, MAX FLEISCHER'S FAMOUS OUT OF THE INKWELL. This is Pointer's third win in a row, having won the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for producing the successful KEN SOUTHWORTH ANIMATION INSTRUCTION series.

Cambridge Animation Bringing Animo To Mac OS X

Cambridge Animation Systems has announced Animo for Mac OS X, Apple's next-generation operating system. Animo integrates 2D and 3D animation for development of feature films, animated television series, commercials, games and multimedia projects. "Mac OS X's UNIX-based foundation, advanced Internet features and stunning graphics capabilities make it an ideal platform for digital animation production," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of worldwide developer relations.
