Jack Davis Wins Reuben Award As Outstanding Cartoonist Of The Year
Presented by the National Cartoonists Society, the 55th Annual Reuben Awards have taken place in Boca Raton, Florida, the home of the International Museum of Cartoon Art. The three-day event climaxed on May 26, 2001 with the presentation of the Reuben Award to the outstanding cartoonist of the year. Jack Davis, best known for advertising illustration and work in MAD Magazine, is the winner of the 55th Annual Reuben Award, the highest honor in the cartooning profession. The Society also presented the Gold Key/Hall of Fame Award to Arnold Roth for fifty years of cartooning excellence.

Bob Miller Joins Cornerstone
Bob Miller has been named creative director of Glendale-based Cornerstone Animation Inc. He is currently working with Cornerstone on the production of the animated portions of a 48 volume direct-to-video series, YOUR CHILD, for Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family. Miller's credits include work on THE SIMPSONS, COURAGE, THE COWARDLY DOG and Hanna-Barberas upcoming direct-to-video movie, SCOOBY-DOO AND THE CYBER-CHASE. Over the last 12 years, he has worked on a wide variety of projects for studios including MGM Animation, Warner Bros. Classic Animation, Warner Bros.
Cambridge Animation Systems Sponsors Awards For Canadian Students
Cambridge Animation Systems, the exclusive developer of Animo software, has signed a five-year sponsorship with the Broadcast Educators Association of Canada (BEAC) to award the best student animator and his or her college or university. The total value of the sponsorship is more than CA$100,000. Under the annual program, students will create animation clips up to 60 seconds in length using traditional or digital animation processes. A panel of experts will judge the clips.

Silicon Pulp animation gallery is celebrating Katsuhiro Otomo's anime opus, AKIRA, with Akira! Akira! Akira!, an exhibition of rarely seen artwork, merchandise, manga and more. Produced in 1988 and based on his cyber-active manga classic of the same name, Otomo's groundbreaking film is the best known and arguably still the best anime to emerge from Japan. The two-hour epic took over one billion yen, 2,200 shots and 160,000 animation cels to make - more than twice the number used in most Hollywood feature-length animation at the time. Akira! Akira! Crouching Tiger TV Toon
Taipei-based SMEC Media & Entertainment has acquired the animated TV rights for Wang Du-Lu's CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON book series on which the hit Sony Classics feature was based. The deal with Vista Publishing Group also gives the Chinese production house the right to produce an animated feature and home video. SMEC is currently pitching the idea around Hollywood. Alexis Wallrich, head of SMEC's U.S. offices in Pasadena, said to Variety, "The source material is a gold mine of fantastic stories and characters.
Film Roman To Produce Animation For The Man Show
Leading independent animation house Film Roman has signed a deal to provide animation for the upcoming season of THE MAN SHOW on Comedy Central. The North Hollywood-based company will create graphics, title cards and over 30 animated bumpers for the show. The 5-10 second bumpers feature THE MAN SHOW mascot, Uncle Phil in various "manly" situations like barbecuing and sleeping on the couch.
