Level13.Net & DIRECTV Want Toons For 1st Annual Animation Fest

LEVEL13.NET and DIRECTV are inviting all aspiring animators to participate in their first co-sponsored Animated Film Festival. The deadline for submissions is September 28. Winners in three categories will be selected by a panel of judges in the field of entertainment, animation and broadcasting and will be announced in December. The winners will receive a US$2,500 cash prize. The three categories are 2D animation, 3D animation and experimental animation.

US Animation Students Lead The Pack At SAFO International Festival

The 3rd edition of the Ottawa International Student Animation Festival (SAFO) (October 18 - 21, 2001) will feature entries from all over the world competing in six categories. This year, students from the United States lead the pack with twelve films making it into the competition. Animation school Cal Arts receives a special honor as a nominee in the best school category. "With over 800 entries from 39 countries, it had been a difficult task for the selection committee," says Festival founder Chris Robinson.

His presentation will include excerpts from his uniquely original, personal and powerful drawn, painted and puppet animation films as well as additional samples of Estonian animation. Toon Musician Holaday Has Passed Away

William Kent "Kenny" Holaday, a musician and artist for feature and television animation for the past 20 years, died on June 22 at his Shadow Hills ranch of complications brought on by a thyroid condition. He was 49 year old. He started his animation career in 1975 as clean-up artist for Hanna-Barbera, and in 1980 moved to Disney Feature Animation in the same capacity. At Disney, he served as a clean-up artist or assistant animator on such feature films as PETE'S DRAGON, THE FOX AND THE HOUND, THE LION KING and TARZAN.

Wrigley’s Unveils New TV Campaign For Winterfresh Gum

Wrigleys Winterfresh chewing gum is getting a new TV campaign that features six spots directed by six different directors showcasing several distinct animation styles. Wrigley and BBDO Chicago developed the creative strategy and led the execution of the creative campaign. San Francisco-based animation studio Wild Brain provided the animation. All spots were scheduled for full rotation as of June 25, 2001. Wrigley has become a champion of breakthrough creative, says Jim Hyman, senior vice president, creative director at BBDO Chicago.

The second annual PlanetOut.com Short Movie Awards has awarded NUMB the First Prize in the Animation category. Directed by Dino Alberto and Dave Hughes, this eerily animated short takes you to a land of lost souls with a secret. The film can be viewed at PlanetOut.com, along with all the other winners. Taking home the audience prize for animation was PIKI AND POKO: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS! By Mark Ewert and David Cutler.
