Animation studio Wild Brain, Inc. has continued the expansion of its global operations with the launch of its new creative services studio Wild Brain UK, LLC based in London. Wild Brain UK is headed by animation and commercial creative director Mike Smith and managing producer Nikki Kefford, with director Tom Gravestock also on board. Powered by talent from London's animation community, Wild Brain UK will be committed to developing emerging talent with a wide-range of distinctive and eclectic styles. Mike Smith, who has spent the last 10 years in the U.S., working at Warner Bros.

Calibre Hires Team To Produce Animated Children’s Series

Canadian visual effects and animation studio Calibre has hired a new team of talent to aid in the companys expansion into production of animated childrens series. Calibre is currently creating the CG portion of 26 half-hour episodes of the AAC KIDS/BBC UK co-production, ACE LIGHTNING AND THE CARNIVAL OF DOOM, a live-action/CG combination childrens series for broadcast on CBBC, the BBCs new childrens block in fall 2002.

GMD Delivers Numbers For Telstra

Sydney, Australia-based visual effects and animation company GMD (Garner MacLennan Design) has completed its latest character animation project with the launch of a series of commercials for telecommunications company Telstra. Produced for the Singleton Ogilvy & Mather (SOM Sydney) agency and the Flying Fish production company, the 30-second spots show people in various situations interacting with animated numbers, the message being that Telstra can make numbers work for people, not against them.

New Riders Announces New Digital Series Titles

New Riders Publishing has released a new series of books for CG professionals. The "digital" series features DIGITAL CHARACTER ANIMATION 2, VOLUME II: ADVANCED TECHNIQUES by George Maestri, a follow up to Maestri's classic, DIGITAL CHARACTER ANIMATION. The new volume is written directly for CG professionals, with more non-software-specific approaches to character animation. According to its creator, DIGITAL CHARACTER ANIMATION 2, VOLUME II is a book on how to really think like an animator.

Woman in Animation (WIA) will be hosting an event for the purpose of RESURRECTING the San Francisco/Bay Area chapter.

The first meeting will be infomational/social/networking oriented. Participants are invited to bring ideas on activities (networking, educational, social) they would like to see happen in a local chapter.

This event welcomes all (that means guys too!) persons currently working in animation in any capacity.

The event will take place from 5-7 pm at Fenix Graph X Studios in the Financial District. RSVP is required.

Nomura Sells Cambridge Animation

Cambridge Animation Systems, developer of Animo 2D software, has been purchased from Japanese investment bank Nomura by a digital media consortium that includes an original founder of the company. The new owners are moving the company to a new and larger facility in Cambridge, England. Over the past 18 months the new management team placed in the company by Nomura has completely reorganized Cambridge Animation Systems, expanded Cambridge's line of products and set up a growing reseller network worldwide.

ACME Filmworks, ASIFA-Hollywood and Women In Animation present a silent auction of original storyboard pastels and paintings and a screening of six animated shorts by Aleksandra Korejwo. Polish director Aleksandra Korejwo's unique style of animation is achieved by using colored salts that are manipulated with the use of a condor feather. A demonstration of this animation method will be presented. This is Aleksandra's debut screening of her collection of films and first art exhibition in the United States.

Cartoon Forum is the annual European animation co-financing event, organized by Cartoon Media, the European animation union. The organizers have chosen 84 television projects and 5 Web projects eligible for funding consideration. In addition, the annual Cartoon d'Or prize will be given during the closing session. Five European films will be chosen as candidates based on their award-winning performances at selected European animation festivals. The money given is to finance a new film, suitable for television.
