Sugar Ray Gets Animated At Cartoonnetwork.Com

If you thought Sugar Ray was already a pretty animated band, wait until you see them at CartoonNetwork.com. The Website introduces an innovative extension to its Web Premiere Toons franchise when it premieres an animated music video starring the Lava/Atlantic recording group. The band has been working with Cartoon Network Online to create and produce a video based on their new hit single, WHEN IT'S OVER, from their forthcoming self-titled album, set for release on June 12, 2001. The animated video will premiere exclusively at CartoonNetwork.com on June 4, 2001.

MTV Greenlights Two New Comedies

MTV has announced its 2001 slate of animated projects, which includes two green-lit animated comedy series and a full roster of other series in development. These shows represent the networks most ambitious move yet into the world of animation, teaming MTV with an A-list of writers, artists and producers. CLONE HIGH follows the lives of four present day high school characters that happen to be cloned from the extracted DNA of some of the most important men and women in history.

yU + co Produces Campaign for WUSA on TNT

yU + co has designed and produced a television advertising campaign for Turner Network Television in support of TNT and CNN/SI coverage of WUSA, the women's professional soccer league. Directed by yU + co creative director Garson Yu, the campaign launches with a 60-second television spot in which soccer stars Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy and Brianna Scurry morph into animated superheroes.

EyeballNYC Spins TV/Web Series for Showtime

Creative design boutique EyeballNYC has teamed with Showtime Networks recently launched ShoNext digital cable channel to produce the 12-episode TV/Web series DISC JOCKEY, an innovative, mixed-media exploration of emerging American DJs. Each two-minute segment combines a documentary-style DJ interview with an animated superhero sequence. Music downloads, DJ tour schedules and other material are available on the Website. "Showtime was very clear in its creative direction," said EyeballNYC director Alex Moulton, who is also a DJ.

Animated Encounters 2001 is in its second year and covers every angle of animation. There will be seminars and workshops led by key industry figures, which give visitors the chance to pitch ideas, plus the opportunity to meet leading studio heads and recruiting producers. Animated Encounters is supported by DreamWorks SKG, BBC Animation, BBC MediaArc, Aardman Animations, WESTEC, A for Animation, and Animation UK magazine. The festival will also feature a Pixar retrospective, a showcase on Australia and a kids' programme.

New Animated Series Premiers On MTV

UNDERGRADS, a new animated series, will premier on MTV this Sunday, April 22, at 8 pm. Co-produced by Torontos Decode and MTV Animation, the series launch also includes a Website featuring Flash animated series out-takes, interactive animated games, character home pages, downloadable applications, weekly video clips, message boards and a chat area. Decode, which also owns the international television and video distribution rights, is launching a companion UNDERGRADS Web page for the international market.

DIC To Produce Josie And The Pussycats Animated Series

DIC Entertainment and Riverdale Productions announced an agreement to co-produce, distribute and merchandise a new animated television series based on the JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS comic book. Riverdale Productions is the film and television arm of Archie Comic Publications and MultiModal Media Group.

Hey, Hey, Hey, It's A Fat Albert Feature

Hey, hey, hey, FAT ALBERT fans, the hefty hero is coming to the big screen. Bill Cosby has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to turn his beloved animated series into a live-action film, featuring some animated moments. Cosby will executive produce the film with his wife, Camille, and write the screenplay with Charles Kipps (EXILED: A LAW & ORDER MOVIE). Producer John Davis brought the project to Fox and will produce the film through his Davis Entertainment Co. No start date has been set but the first draft of the script should be finished within two to three weeks.

The Toronto Animated Image Society's Upcoming Events

On Thursday, March 22, 2001, the Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) presents a double event: Richard Reeves and Frozen Moments. Animator Richard Reeves will be on hand to introduce his award-winning films "Sea Song" and "Linear Dreams" and premiere some new works. Richard has mastered the technique of creating animated films by scratching, bleaching and painting on raw 35mm movie film to create beautiful animated films without using a camera.

Oscars Do Not Reject Father & Daughter & Periwig-Maker

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has announced their nominations for the coveted Oscar award. Receiving nominations for best animated short were Michael Dudok de Wit's lyrically elegant FATHER & DAUGHTER, Steffen and Annette Schaffler's moody puppet film THE PERIWIG-MAKER and Don Hertzfeldt's humorously chaotic short REJECTED. GLADIATOR, HOLLOW MAN and THE PERFECT STORM all received nods for best visual effects. Surprisingly absent from the F/X nomination list was Disney's $150 million-plus budgeted DINOSAUR.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Makes Animated Debut On Weekenders

PARTY OF FIVE star Jennifer Love Hewitt will be making her first-ever animated appearance on Disney's THE WEEKENDERS. The Valentines-themed episode will premiere on Saturday, February 10 (8:30 am ET/7:30 am PT) on ABC. Voicing her animated alter ego, Hewitt will play one of the girls the WEEKENDERS kids try to set up with their friend, Tino, who is smitten with a girl the group doesn't like. Hewitt's other voice work includes Medusa on Disneys HERCULES television series, and characters for the upcoming video sequel to HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and Miramax Films upcoming THE ADVENTURES OF TOM THUMB AND THUMBELINA.

Father & Daughter Wins Clermont-Ferrand Fest

The Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival has announced its winners. Michael Dudok De Wit's FATHER & DAUGHTER took home the award for best international animated film. Receiving the prize for best French animated short was Florence Miailhe's AU PREMIER DIMANCHE D' AOÛT. AtomFilms sponsored both of the animated short categories. The jury was comprised of Wasis Diop, Qu-Dok Hwang, Cédric Kahn and world-renowned director of AT THE ENDS OF THE WORLD Konstantin Bronzit. Over 136 films were in official competition from over 50 countries.

Adam Sandler's Meatball Animation Makes Feature

Comedian Adam Sandler's Meatball Animation is set to produce a feature, animated film entitled WHITEY & DAVEY. Described as a "Hanukkah musical," the story centers on Davey, a pro basketball executive, who befriends an old-fashioned coach named Whitey. Sandler will travel to the Toronto-based studio in mid-February to begin voice work for the Davey role. Traditionally animated, the feature will contain a bevy of pop tunes. The film should be finished for a Christmas 2001 release upon securing distribution.
