the fascinating documentary series "Animated Women". Commissioned
by ITVS and produced by Side-Kicks Productions, New York, for public television,
this award-winning series profiles both the artistry and wildly diverse
creative philosophies of a rare breed of woman: the independent American
animator.
Meet Faith Hubley, Joanna Priestley, Ruth Peyser, and Lynn Smith. Each of
these independent animators talks candidly about how she is pursuing her
chosen career.

Den zweiten Teil bildet Joanna Priestleys "Point of View". Priestley
bezieht sich ehrfürchtig auf Hubley als "die Erfahrenere",
sie selbst hingegen hat sich weltweit einen beeindruckenden Ruf erworben.
Ihre oftmals sehr persönlichen ond oft spöttischen Betrachtungen
über die Irrungen und Wirrungen des Erwachsenenalters zeigen eine Priestley,
die keine Angst vor Selbstenthüllungen hat.
Faith Hubley, the most prolific of the four, has also been the most collaborative.
The grande dame among women animators in the USA, winner of "more prizes
than I can count", including three Oscars, speaks eloquently in this
documentary on "Inspiration", which in her case extends to myth,
primitive art, aboriginal painting and playful theories on the nature of
time.
The second part profiles Joanna Priestley's "Point of View". While
Priestley refers reverentially to Hubley as "an elder", she herself
has developed an impressive, worldwide reputation. The maker of intensely
personal and often mocking looks at adulthood's ironic twists and turns,
Priestley has no fear of self-revelation.

Ruth Peyser zeichnet jedes Bild, um die Stimmung ihres neuesten Films zu
reflektieren. sie gibt zu, daß "das sehr arbeitsintensiv ist".

Australien nach Manhattan, gibt diese Filmemacherin ihren Geschichten über
New York urbane Standfestigkeit und aktivistische Züge.
Lynn Smith hatte die Idee zu "Pearl's Diner" vor 20 Jahren während
eines Mittagessens in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Für den Film - ein
Experiment in Collage - brauchte sie neun Jahre. sie beendete ihn in Montreal,
Quebec, wo sie seit Mitte der 70er Jahre lebt.
Ruth Peyser paints every image to reflect the mood of her latest film. "It's
very labor-intensive", she agrees, "Each frame takes an awfully
long time to do". This Australian expatriate to Manhattan brings an
urban grit and an activist edge to her New York stories.
Lynn Smith had the idea for "Pearl's Diner" one day during lunch
twenty years ago in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The film, an experiment in
collage, took her nine years to make. She finished it in Montreal, Quebec,
where she has lived since the mid-70's.
