Der erste Spielfilm der Brothers Quay ist kein Animationsfilm im herkömmlichen
Sinne. Trotz nur weniger "versteckter" Animationstricks erfährt
in dieser traumartigen Geschichte die Idee der "Animation" eine
Erweiterung: Denn die Schauspieler seien, laut Brothers Quay, mit dem gleichen
Respekt behandelt worden wie die Puppen, die sie in zahlreichen Trickfilmen
zuvor zum Leben erweckten.Zudem machen die präzise Kamerarbeit und
subtile Lichtsetzung augenscheinlich, daß hier Trickfilmer am Werk
waren. Institute Benjamenta ist inspiriert von Motiven Robert Walsers und
spielt in einem morbiden Internat. Am Institute Benjamenta werden Diener
ausgebildet, doch sein Lehrplan besteht lediglich aus der endlosen Wiederholung
der immergleichen Lektion. Ein Neuling, Jakob von Gunten, versucht, die
Bedeutung der Schule zu ergründen, und gelangt zu Fräulein und
Herrn Benjamenta, in die geheimen Räume und Welten des Instituts, das
dem Untergang geweiht ist. Labyrinthisch entzieht sich die Erzählung
einer linearen Logik und fordert von der Wahrnehmung des Zuschauers einen
- nicht nur im übertragenen Sinne - "schrägen Blick".
The first feature film by the Quay Brothers is not an animated film in the
conventional sense. In this dream-like story, the idea of "Animation"
experiences an addition, despite few hidden animated tricks: according to
the Quay Brothers, the actors were treated with the same respect as the
puppets, which they have brought to life before, in numerous animated films.
The precise camera work and subtle lighting make it moreover evident that
animators are here at work. Institute Benjamenta is inspired by themes from
Robert Walser, and is set in a morbid boarding-school. Servants are trained
at the Institute Benjamenta, however the curriculum exists merely of an
endless repetition of the same lesson. A newcomer, Jakob von Gunten tries
to discover the meaning of the school and comes across Miss and Mr. Benjamenta,
in the secret rooms and worlds of the institute, which is doomed to destruction.
The story distances itself from a linear logic in a maze-like fashion, and
demands that the audience observe it from an - not only in the figurative
sense - oblique angle.
