Avantgarde

Mit dem Begriff "Avantgarde" zu operieren, wird zunehmend zu einem heiklen Unterfangen. Sicherlich könnte auch das Programm "Visual Music" unter diesem Begriff subsumiert werden. Das Programm "Avantgarde" beschränkt sich auf wenige Schlüsselwerke aus der Geschichte des gegenständlichen Animationsfilms und in stilistische und thematische Gruppen zusammengefaßte Filme der letzten 10 Jahre, die allesamt künstlerisch innovativ mit dem Wechselverhältnis von Bild und Musik umgehen.

"L'idée" von Berthold Bartosch basiert auf einem Buch mit Holzschnitten von Frans Masereel. Zur Umsetzung benutzt Bartosch Legetrickfiguren, um den schöpferischen Akt und den Prozeß einer künstlerischen Idee zu beschreiben. Die Musik wurde 1934 von Arthur Honegger für ein neues spezielles elektronisches Instrument komponiert. Wegweisend für die Ästhetik des Videoclips ist Len Lyes "Rainbow Dance". Jan Svankmajers greift auf dadaistische Verfahren zurück, um anhand einer Enzyklopädie mit Tierzeichnungen die Schattenseiten von Wissenschaft, Aufklärung und Moderne aufzuzeigen. Das musikalische Spektrum von "Lykantropia", "The Sound of Music" und "Acid Wine" reicht von Free Jazz bis Metal Punk, wobei die Filme in der Sprödigkeit der Bilder ihre Gemeinsamkeit haben. Karen Aqua und Erica Russell setzen sich in ihren Filmen insbesondere mit Tanz und Bewegung auseinander, wobei sie zu sehr unterschiedlichen Formulierungen gelangen: Während sich Karen Aqua mit konturierten Icons an der amerikanischen Graffity-Kultur orientiert, verwendet Erica Russell nuancenreich zarte Pastelltöne, um das Ausdrucksrepertoire des modernen Tanztheaters darzustellen.

To work with the term "Avant-garde", is increasingly becoming a delicate undertaking. Surely the programme "Visual Music" could also be shelved under this term. The programme "Avant-garde" is narrowed down to a few key works from the history of the representational animated film, and compiles in stylistic and thematic groups films from the last ten years, which all deal with the relationship of picture and music in an artistic and innovative way.

"Lidée" by Berthold Bartosch is based on a book of wooden figures by Frans Masereel. To move them, Bartosch uses cut-out figures to describe the creative act and describe the process of an artistic idea. The music was composed by Arthur Honegger in 1934 for a new special electronic instrument. Leading the way for the aesthetic in music video, is Len Lye´s "Rainbow Dance". Jan Svankmajer falls back on dadaistic methods in order to point out the negative sides of science, the enlightenment, and modernism among an encyclopedia of animal drawings. The musical spectrum from "Lykantropia", "The Sound of Music", and "Acid Wine" reaches from Free Jazz to Metal Punk, although the films have their common ground in the roughness of their pictures. Karen Aqua and Erica Russell use much dance and movement in their films, although they achieve very different effects: while Karen Aqua concentrates on the American graffiti-culture using contoured icons, Erica Russell uses tender pastel tones full of nuances, to present the expressive repertoire of the modern dance theatre.
