Rabenschwarz wie die Tusche der Zeichenfeder sind die Inhalte von Phil Mulloys
Zeichnungen, die im Zusammenhang mit seinen Filmen entstanden. Hart und
kantig beschreibt er in Filmen wie "The Ten Commandments", "The
Sound of Music" und "The History of the World" Vergangenheit
und Gegenwart der Menschheit voller Derbheiten. Was sich innerhalb des filmischen
Ablaufs verflüchtigen kann, bleibt auf den graphischen Blättern
unumstößlich statuarisch: eine düstere Triebwelt, in der
die Hemmschwellen gefallen sind. Mord und Totschlag gehören hier zu
den harmlosen Delikten... Die Zeichnungen erschließen sich als Graphikzyklen,
deren Erzählstil an die Illustrationen von Moritaten erinnert, deren
moralischer Impetus verloren gegangen scheint. Mulloy, der Malerei am Ravensbourne
College of Art studierte, kombiniert Elemente des Expressionismus und des
art brut mit der Rohheit des Punks und gelangt bei seinen Kurzfilmen und
Bilderzyklen zu intelligenten, nahezu universalhistorischen und von bösem
Skeptizismus geprägten Ansichten.
Einzelne Blow-Ups von Zeichnungen wurden speziell für diese Ausstellung
angefertigt und nachkoloriert.

The Culture and Convention Centre Liederhalle, the upper foyer of the Schillersaal
The content of Phil Mulloy's drawings, which were produced in connection
with his films, are jet black just like the ink of a drawing-pen.
In films like "The Ten Commandments", "The Sound of Music"
and "The History of the World", he describes the past and present
of mankind, with all its crudities, in a harsh and contoured way. What may
disappear within the sequence of cinematic event, remains irrefutably statutory
on the graphical pages: a dismal world of physical desire, in which all
inhibitions have diminished. Here murder and manslaughter belong to the
harmless crimes...The drawings are developed as graphical cycles, the narrative
style of which is a reminder of the illustrations of ballads, which seem
to have lost their moral impetus. Mulloy, who studied painting at the Ravensbourne
College of Art, combines elements of expressionism and art brut with the
brutality of punk cult and he achieves intelligent, almost universally historical
views, also characterized by evil scepticism with his short films and series
of pictures.
Individual blow-ups of the drawings have been specially made and colour-treated
for this exhibition.
