MIPCOM Announces Mobile TV Awards Winners 2006

MIPCOM announces the winners of the Mobile TV Screening & Awards 2006. The international trophies were awarded on Oct. 11, 2006, in a packed auditorium at the 22nd edition of MIPCOM. The winning titles were chosen by an international grand jury from a total of 23 nominated projects.

Sponsored by Orange, Ericsson and the Korean Broadcasting Commission, the Mobile Screenings & Awards 2006 call-for-entries opened as of July this year and brought in a record number of 290 entries from 34 countries, a 30% increase in submissions from 2005.

ZDF Brings Five Properties to MIPCOM

ZDF Enterprises GmbH is bringing five properties to MIPCOM 2006, where they can be found at booths 21.02 and 23.01.

The live-action series, H2O JUST ADD WATER (2x90 or 52x26) is an adventure-drama about how to stay "normal" when you're a part-time mermaid. Three 16-year-old girls find themselves exploring the eerie, jungle covered island eventually ending up trapped in an ancient cave system under a volcano.

Taffy Ent. EBS & France 5 Team For New Series Lamimila

Taffy Ent. has signed a co-production deal with Korean broadcaster EBS and France 5, for its new preschool series LAMIMILA, produced by MoonScoop and Characterplan.

This 65x7 series is aimed at a preschool audience, which is set for a fall 2007 delivery.

All-New Casper The Friendly Ghost Series Coming

MoonScoop and Classic Media announced that they will produce and distribute a brand new CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST animated series. Indias DQ Ent. has also come on board as co-production partner and the series will be developed with TF1 in France. Production on the new 52x11 series is set to commence in February 2007. Distribution of the new series will be shared between the co-production partners.

Cinamour Ent. launches new animated property, THE DANCING PUMPKIN, at MIPCOM. At the event, the company will be located at booth 09.18.

THE DANCING PUMPKIN is a 60-minute animated holiday special. The night before Halloween, a house of children catch their jack-o-latern coming to life and dancing on their front porch. The dancing pumpkin takes them on a ride into his world of magic creatures. By working together, the children and the dancing pumpkin save Halloween from the evil plot of a scheming witch.

Monster Launches Edgy Anna and the Moods at MIPCOM

Monster Distributes launched CAOZ�s edgy 3D animated film, ANNA AND THE MOODS at MIPCOM.

ANNA AND THE MOODS is written by Academy Award-nominated Icelandic writer Sj�n on a commission by the Brodsky Quartet. Julian Nott, composer of WALLACE AND GROMIT, sets Sj�n's story to music. The Brodsky Quartet has performed a musical version of the work on live tours in the UK, with Sj�n performing the story. Voices are by Bjork, Damon Albarn, Terry Jones, Sjon and Thorunn Laurusdottir.

Results coming out of MIPCOM Jr. shows Aardmans SHAUN THE SHEEP (U.K.) topping the list of the most requested series at the event, taking place in Cannes, France. A new finisher in the Jr. race shows Ettamogah Ent. Groups AMYS GANG (Australia) in second place while BRB Internactional came in third for ANGUS AND CHERYL (Spain). In fourth place was 4Kids Ent. for its CHAOTIC (USA) and in fifth was Cake Ent. Ltd.s SKUNK FU! (U.K.).

Cape Town’s Strika Ent. Debuts First Toon at MIPCOM Jr.

Cape Town-based Strika Ent. debuted its first Flash-animated series, SUPA STRIKAS, at this years MIPCOM Jr.

The animated series is based on Strikas most popular comic, SUPA STRIKAS. The comic follows the ups and downs of an African soccer team. The comic is a huge success with 1.5 million copies distributed every month to eight African countries and South America.

Strika Animation completed 13x1 Flash animated episodes that were broadcast in South Africa and in the rest of Africa.

Saban Returns to Kids Roots

Haim Saban has launched a new venture to develop family programs, according to REUTERS.

Saban's L.A.-based private equity firm Saban Capital Group Inc. will form a virtual studio, employing freelance producers, writers and artists. The new company will fund global programming that can be exploited across different delivery systems, including video games, mobile devices and broadcast TV.

"I am thrilled to return to my roots and focus on developing media properties for children and families," Saban said in a statement.

P&PM (Production & Partners Multimedia), a French production company headed by Sidonie Herman, is coming to MIPCOM (#LR 2.09) to unveil its inked animation deals, which include THE SECRETS OF DROON (26x26), an HD animated series with Tony Abbott and Template Ent.; a 3D HD animated series, BUGHOUSE ROCK (26x26), and a 2D animated series, THE LOST WORLD, (26x26) with Vivavision; MAGNITKA, a 2D animated series with Vivavision and TV Pinguim; EAT ME (104x1), a 3D HD animated series with Neutral Prods.; a 3D animated series, LEO (26x26), and an animated feature film, ZENZANO (82) with Dujass Film.

G4 to Run Mel Brooks Animated Spaceballs Series

G4, which is now available in 59 million cable and satellite homes nationwide, has exclusively licensed the first run of SPACEBALLS THE ANIMATED SERIES for the U.S. market to premiere in fall 2007.Mel Brooks who created the comedy classic SPACEBALLS, is teaming, via his Brooksfilms Ltd., with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. Monster Sells I’m an Animal for Nickelodeon UK

Monster Distributes just sold its new animated series, IM AN ANIMAL, from Oscar-nominated Brown Bag Films to Nickelodeon UK. Produced with the support of RTE and the Irish Film Board, the series has already been sold to Rai Italy, TV Ontario, Knowledge Network Canada, Cartoon Network Australia, Cable TV Hong Kong, Sanctuary UK, Hungama TV Indonesia, Malaysia and India and Al Sayyar in the Middle East.

IM AN ANIMAL was one of the top programs at MIPCOM Jr. last year, and will have all 52x2 episodes completed this month.

Aardman Launches International TV Distribution Division

Aardman Animations, the Academy Award-winning stop-motion animation studio, is making its foray into distribution, launching its own dedicated sales arm, Aardman International, to exploit its growing catalogue of properties.

TV2 Denmark Makes Major Commitment To DECODE Shows

DECODE Ent. has made a raft of sales to TV2 Denmark. Two innovative series created and co-produced with Aardman Animations, CHOP SOCKY CHOOKS and PLANET SKETCH have been acquired by the Danish broadcaster alongside DECODEs pre-school show THE SAVE-UMS.

Josh Scherba, sales exec at DECODE Ent., said, PLANET SKETCH is going from strength to strength and were confident that CHOP SOCKY CHOOKS will have a similar impact. THE SAVE-UMS! also continues to be popular, and its great to have three of our shows lined up for TV2s kids schedule.

Spring Strikes MIP-TV

The weather is lovely in Cannes, the spring flowers are in bloom, lots of animation abounds, but many MIP-goes may not experience any of this due to an air traffic controllers strike in France that has cancelled most flights coming into Nice, the closest airport to the MIP market.

Those entered the Palais convention hall on Monday, April 3, 2006, saw a handwritten list of affected flights. While expected to be over before the weekend, this presents a hardship to those expecting to arrive and leave mid-market.

Films By Jove Launches Animated Soviet Propaganda Series

Films by Jove has begun delivery of the much anticipated ANIMATED SOVIET PROPAGANDA series. The unique anthology is based on more than three dozen anti-American, anti-German, anti-British, anti-Japanese, anti-Capitalist and anti-Imperialist animated shorts produced by the Soviets from 1924-1984.

Pages
