Bob and Margaret was based on the 12 minute Oscar winning short film, Bob's Birthday, which Alison and David made for The National Film Board of Canada and Channel 4 Television in the U.K. There are 52 half hour episodes of Bob and Margaret which were produced by Nelvana Limited in Toronto. The first 26 were overseen from London and Toronto by Alison and David who directed the voices and reviewed artwork and storyboards from their office/home while they weren't at the Nelvana studios in Toronto. They also wrote a number of scripts and story edited the ones they didn't write. Alison Snowden is also the voice of Margaret. For the second 26 episodes (season 3 and 4), Bob and Margaret moved to Toronto themselves. This was because the major funding for the production was from Canada and this required that the series tell stories based in Canada. So the Fish's moved to Toronto for adventures as displaced Brits in North America. Alison and David consulted on the series, but did not direct or story edit the shows as they did in the first two series. All 52 episodes continue to air in Canada in prime time on the Global Television Network. They will be on Showtime in the US this summer 2002 and continue to air in the UK on the Paramount Comedy Network. The show is also broadcast in numerous other countries throughout the world.
