Japanese Animation and Global Media

The Society for Animation Studies announces its Eighth Annual Conference,
to be held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, September 25-29, 1996.
This location is particularly advantageous for scholars interested in visiting
the archives of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research.
This year's call for papers encourages explorations of JAPANESE ANIMATION
AND GLOBAL MEDIA. However, as always, paper proposals on all topics are
welcome. The conference will cover a variety of critical approaches, genres,
and historical periods and will intersperse paper presentations with filmmaker
panels, workshops, and retrospective screenings of rare and significant
animation.
ALL PROPOSALS SHOULD BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN JULY 15, 1996. Submit an
abstract that is no more than one page in length outlining the purpose,
method, and conclusions of the proposed paper. The Selection Committee will
review all proposals and respond by the end of July. Selected participants
should prepare talks of about 20 minutes, including slide, film and/or video
illustrations. Papers may be delivered in any language, if accompanied by
an English translation.
The Conference also welcomes preconstituted panels. Each will consist of
two or three presenters plus a respondent. Panel coordinators should submit
a proposal by July 15, 1996, which includes a short paragraph explaining
the significance of the panel, a list of the participants, the affiliation
of each participant, and the title and a brief outline of the content of
each presentation. Participants may propose papers for individual consideration
in the event that the preconstituted panel is not accepted.
A videotheque will screen films relating to papers and show members' recent
work. Videotheque suggestions are welcome. There will also be nightly film
screenings of 35mm prints. For the second year, publishers will display
recent books and journals relating to animation. Susan Ohmer is coordinating
this event. Authors, contact your publishers!
The Conference fee is US$75 and includes luncheon on Friday, September 27.
A limited number of guest rooms have been reserved in Lowell Hall where
the panels will meet (610 Langdon Street, Madison, WI 53706 USA, phone 608/231
1341, US$46 single/US$52 double). More rooms are available at the Friedrick
Center, a long walk from Lowell Hall, 1950 Willow Drive, Madison, WI 53706
USA, phone 608/231-1341, US$42 single/US$48 double). There is also the Madison
Inn, a nearby hotel (601 Langdon Street, Madison, WI 53703 USA, phone 608/257-4391,
