13th SAS Annual Conference
Montreal, Canada
Monday October 22 -Thursday October 25, 2001The annual conference of the Society for Animation Studies will be held in 2001 in Montreal, Canada. The main theme of this conference is "Animation, Economics and Politics." Peter Rist, associate professor in the Film Studies Department of Concordia University will host the conference and assist with the organization. Because of the number of papers received, the conference has been extended by one day and will now be held Monday, October 22 through Thursday, October 25, 2001.
The cost for attending the conference are USD 125, but if payment is made to one of the SAS treasurers before October 15, 2001 the cost is USD 100. For students this cost is USD 75 and USD 50, respectively.
A deliberate choice has been made to hold the conference immediately following the Student Animation Film Festival Ottawa, so that the festival can be visited. On Friday, October 18, 2001 the SAFO will organize a seminar on animation study programs. You are invited to participate. Maureen Furniss will be one of the speakers. For the entire program go to: www.awn.com/ottawa/safo01. SAS Conference participants receive a 40% reduction on the SAFO entrance fee and visitors to the SAFO receive a reciprocal 40% reduction on the SAS Conference entrance fee. Given the price of the air ticket, it may be worthwhile for many visitors to first visit SAFO and to then travel on to Montreal. There is a bus connection from Dorval Airport in Montreal to Ottawa (approximately 2 hours) and also from Ottawa to Montreal. Itineraries will follow.
About The Conference
The first day of the conference is organized by the National Film Board of Canada. The program includes a showing of the new NFB films and a visit to the archives and the library. A reception there will provide an opportunity to become better acquainted with each other and the animation filmmakers who work at the NFB. Registration for the conference takes place here. The conference will be held in one of the halls of Concordia University, near the Guy/Concordia metro stop. There are numerous small restaurants, bars and hotels in the neighborhood of the University. One hotel that is offering a considerable reduction will be the conference hotel. Reduced room rates (CAD 89 instead of CAD 159) may still be available. Contact the Maritime Plaza Hotel, 1155, Rue Guy, Montreal. Phone: 1 514 932 1411 www.hotelmaritime.com. There is also a Youth Hostel in the vicinity where the accommodation per night is cheaper than in the hotel.
On this same metro line is the metro stop for the Cinémathèque. Here two evening programs will be shown: a film program with unknown films by Norman McLaren and a visit to an exhibition, archives and a lecture. There is also a restaurant at the Cinémathèque.
