SAFO SELECTION FINALLY OVER!

After being flooded with over 600 entries from over 30 countries, SAFO organizers have finally completed the selections for the 1997 Official Competition. 87 films from 16 countries will be part of the four Official Competition programmes at SAFO 97.

"I am not only astonished at the quantity of entries received, but more importantly the quality." says SAFO Executive Director, Chris Robinson. The films are extraordinarily varied in technique (cel, cut-out, sand, clay, pixallation, computer etc..) and rich in inventiveness and maturity. Without doubt, the work being done by International students surpasses that of most North American students. While International schools, notably the Royal College of Art, Volda, VCA, Turku, ENSAD, among others, are encouraging their students to creatively explore and express their individual imaginations, feelings, and experiences, North American schools, with a few exceptions, seem intent on simply assembling and nurturing their students for jobs in the commercial industry. Nevertheless, the overall quality of these student and first year films arguably exceeds that of much of the work being made by more established animators, and as we approach the end of the century, suggests that animation will continue to evolve and prosper well into the 21st century."

Unless otherwise indicated, the Festival will retain all video entries for its archives. If you wish to have your work returned, please include with your entry a cheque or money order along with proper return shipping instructions. Note: Films and videocassettes will be returned, uninsured, by surface parcel post, if money for special return is not received with the entry. May we suggest you use your country's diplomatic channels to ship and return your film/videocassette to Ottawa.

Toutes soumissions vidéos seront retenues par le Festival pour ses archives à moins d'être indiqué autrement par le/la réalisateur(trice). Assurez-vous d'inclure avec votre formulaire d'inscription un chèque ou un mandat-poste international couvrant les frais de réexpédition de votre copie film ou de votre cassette vidéo ainsi que les directives appropriÈes. Sinon, elle sera réexpédiée en dernier, par voie, de surface et sans assurance. Nous vous suggérons, si celas avère possible, de faire expédier et réexpédier votre copie ou votre cassette par voies diplomatiques.

_____I DO NOT grant the Festival the right to show on television, for publicity purposes, up to 10% of the running time of my production to a maximum of three minutes.
