Headline News U2 3D Film Director Selected As SIGGRAPH 2008 Featured Speaker

ACM SIGGRAPH announced the selection of Irish artist and director Catherine Owens, best known for her staging and film work with the Irish rock band U2, as a featured speaker for SIGGRAPH 2008 to be held in Los Angeles this August.

Owens will present "Giving Technology Emotion: From the Artist's Mind to U2 3D," which details her co-directing and producing experiences during production of the film U2 3D, the first digital 3D, multi-camera, real-time production.

Sierra Ent., a division of Vivendi Games, today announced the development of THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR, a videogame based on the Universal Pictures' production. The game, which will mirror the film, is being developed by Eurocom Studios for the Wii and PlayStation 2 and by A2M for Nintendo DS. The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) entry deadline is fast approaching for the 2008 event taking place Sept. 17-21, 2008. Each year, by the June 1 deadline, the OIAF receives over 2,000 entries. Only 100 are selected to be screened. Animators are invited to submit their recent work in six major categories including independent short films, feature films, new media, commissioned films (TV series, commercials, music video etc), student films and work made for children. There is no entry fee. Preview DVDs must be received by June 16.

Headline News Hazel Comic Strip Creator Ted Key Dies

The ASSOCIATED PRESS reports that cartoonist Ted Key, creator of the comic strip HAZEL, has died at the age of 95.

Key's son, Peter Key confirmed to the AP that Key died at his home on Saturday in the Philadelphia suburb of Tredyffrin Township after a 1 1/2-year battle with cancer.

HAZEL, about a bossy maid, debuted in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST in 1943 and evolved into a primetime TV series starring Shirley Booth in the 1960s on NBC and CBS.
