Headline News CJ-7 Gets Toon Sequel

VARIETY reports that Stephen Chow is in works on an animated sequel to his sci-fi comedy CJ-7. Star Overseas Co. and state-owned China Film Group are funding the project. MCDULL director Toe Yuen will helm the new film, which will feature the same characters and actors as the original live-action production. Chow will exec produce the film, which will start production in September for a spring 2010 release in China.

Disney XD will launch in Japan in August, according to VARIETY.

The re-branded Toon Disney has been airing in the U.S. since December and in France since April. Offering animation and live-actions shows specifically aimed toward boys 6-14, the Japanese debut marks the third territory for the channel.

Disney XD will replace Japan's Toon Disney on Sky PerfecTV! And Sky PerfecTV! e2 satellite platforms, cable and broadband TV. Viewers will get the new channel with no new applications or payments.

A new strategic partnership has been reached between Lucasfilm and GenArts, the makers of software plug-ins for Autodesk Flame and Inferno and Avid editing products such as Sapphire.

The plan is to not only broaden GenArts software and composting technology across all media, including TV, animation and videogames, but to also penetrate every Lucasfilm division as well. While Lucasfilm already has a strategic alliance with Autodesk, CTO Richard Kerris told VFXWORLD that it is not this deep.
