Astro Boy and Static Shock Back With New Adventures On Kids’ WB!

ASTRO BOY has zoomed back into action in the U.S. on Kids WB! with 25 all new anime adventures that debuted Jan. 17, 2004 at 8:30 am ET and 7:30 am PT. The day also marked the fourth season of STATIC SHOCK (11:30 am ET and 10:30 am PT) with 13 new episodes. STATIC SHOCK is also part of the weekday lineup, airing in its new 3:30 pm slot.

In its debut as a NATPE exhibitor, Playhut Entertainment, the entertainment and programming subsidiary of toy manufacturer Playhut Inc., will introduce buyers to Chinamation, five new series featuring the distinctive artistic style of China's top independent animators and premiere the pilot episode of its first animated pre-school series, LITTLE SIGNZ.

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) big animated series, ASTRO BOY, premieres on the Kids WB! in the U.S. Jan. 17, 2004, the day before the NATPE exhibit floor opens. ASTRO BOY and CYBORG 009 are amongst a diverse slate from SPTI, which includes STEPHEN KING'S KINGDOM HOSPITAL, JOAN OF ARCADIA, MISSING and THE RESIDENTS, MACHOS and POOR ANASTASIA. SPTI will be located off the floor in the Venetian Hotel, Casanova Room 504.

Witch Hunter Robin Joins Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim

Cartoon Network has added the gothic anime series, WITCH HUNTER ROBIN, to its Adult Swim lineup. Beginning Feb. 16, 2004, the show will air Monday-Thursday at midnight.

Set in present-day Japan where witches abuse their supernatural powers, a special team, lead by the flame conjurer Robin, hunts this new threat with a blend of technology, forensic science and supernatural powers. The series is directed by animé veteran Shukou Murase, who served as character designer for GUNDAM WING and ARGENTOSOMA.

Conceived by Ogilvy & Mather, New York, each of the 15-second spots presents a close-up image of beer being poured into a glass. Animated type echoes the voice-over as it cleverly asserts Miller Lite's advantages in terms of fewer carbs and better taste. Each spot ends with the tag, "Good Choice."

Toonz Animation Chairman Menon Dies

G.A. Menon, chairman of Toonz Animation India (Technopark, Trivandrum, India), died on Dec. 2, 2003 at the age of 72 of a heart attack he suffered on a Los Angelesbound flight from Singapore.

A native of Kerala, Menons career spanned more than 40 years in the global electronics business. He began his career at a statistician in the Thackersey Mooljee Group of textile mills in Bombay. Upon receiving his M.B.A. from Harvard, he held various managerial positions at IBM for 15 years.

De Line Appointed New Production Head at Paramount

Producer Donald De Line has been appointed vice chairman, Motion Picture Group and president, Paramount Pictures, effective Jan. 5, 2004. De Line replaces John Goldwyn, who is stepping down to become a producer at the studio in the wake of criticism that the feature slate has not only performed below expectation at the box office (including the disappointing LARA CROFT sequel), but also lacks Oscar prestige. Reporting to Sherry Lansing, chairman, Paramount Pictures, De Line is expected to pump up and diversify the studio's feature production slate during this three-year stint.
