    Lisa Scheidt

Lisa Scheidt is a native of Calgary, Alberta. She attended the Alberta College of Art and Design, graduating in 1983 with a diploma in Visual Communications (Commercial Att). It is in college that Lisa first developed an interest in animation; particularly, the work of the Disney Studios. For ten years alter graduation, she worked as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator before deciding to work full time on her own projects. At the moment, her time is spent either working on drawings to exhibit in art galleries or on the production of her current film project "Catch Me Cat".

    Artist's Statement

The drawing style that has kept me preoccupied over the years involves a lot of light cross-hatching strokes with coloured pencils. I am also intrigued by intricate detail and my observations of everyday life. The fine, small movements of the pencil and my tendency toward careful, introspective thought processes seem to go hand in hand. To me, Animation is simply another medium for which to express these thoughts and techniques.

    Catch Me Cat

1999 (work in progress) paper cut-out animation

This short film is about a small child and an enigmatic cat who share many strange adventures in this unusual coming-of-age tale. One day, the little girl encounters an unusual blue cat and from that moment, things take on a surreal twist including time travel, witch hunts, and all manner of fuzzy feline friends. The final artwork for the film will be done almost entirely using paper cutouts coloured with prismacolour pencils. I chose to work in the 12 field format because I feel that this will make the cutting and manipulating of the paper a little easier. This larger field size will, hopefully, enhance the fine details and rich colours of the drawings as well (the work of animators such as Frederick Bach and Caroline Leaf have had a great influence on me over the years). The artwork is all hand drawn with coloured pencils, then cut out and shot onto 35mm film stock.

Funding for this project provided by The Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

    Maggie's Dress

    1999 paper cut-out animation

Lisa Scheidt's first film, Maggie's Dress was also hand drawn cutouts. This film is intended as an exploration of the concept of collective consciousness and that perhaps the subconscious dream world is the door through which we all tap into that. However, I also wanted to have fun with colour and movement and present the idea in an unusual, quirky way.
