    QAS all over the OIAF

    By Carol Beecher

This year Hamish and the QAS cohort had a big presence at the 2002 Ottawa International Animation Festival.  You may have noticed that the office was closed October 2 to 6, that's because we were all in Ottawa!  17 (count 'em, 17!) QAS members, from various locales, made the trip this year!  And some of us had extra good reasons for being there.  Richard Reeves was in competition with his cameraless film 1:1.  Richard also created the festival signal film this year, along with several QAS members and a group of animators from Toronto.

Malcolm Sutherland was in the Canadian Panorama presentation with his cut out video Robot City.  Kevin Kurytnik curated the retrospective presentation "Hold Still While I Nail a Bat to Your Forehead: the animated films of Harry Smith".  Julia Burns was official QAS rep for the fest and helped to facilitate the QAS sponsored Chez Ani hospitality suite, in particular the Film Loop presentation and the BYOA (Bring Your Own Animation) Open Screen.  Carol Beecher also helped out with the Chez Ani, presenting Harry Smith's Anthology of Folk Music, and was part of the Marketing Yourself panel.  Andy Jaremko hosted the Animation Challenge at the Chez Ani all week and put his Stop Motion Station animation program through its paces.

Jean-François Côté went on a buying trip for the QAS library.

Laurie Breitkreuz, John Lees, Brian Batista, Colin Kennedy, Cam Melin and Emily Gorda chipped in with running the Chez Ani, thanks A LOT!  Meg Nicks (Canmore), Gail Noonan (Mayne Island, B.C.), Helen Hill (New Orleans), and Jacelyn Hart (Ottawa) also converged on the fest.  And we bumped into a few past members, Warren Leonhart (who's now working for Spumco doing the new Ren and Stimpy series), Rachel Peters, and Kim Anderson.
