SOUND DESIGN WEEKEND WORKSHOP
Instructor: Steve Hansen Smythe
Fee: $100 ($75 QAS Members)
Date: November 26-27/05
Saturday & Sunday 10am – 4pm
Create an animated film with soundtrack in only one weekend! Easy if you neglect to do the visual part. This course starts with examples of animated films in which sound advances the plot, heightens the mood, clarifies the visuals, or simply complements the art. Participants then learn about as many of the available means to produce a sound track at Quickdraw as time permits, from computer software to those old synths that nobody seems to know what to do with. The final assignment is to create a sound track to an imaginary film, telling the story with sound alone.

Steve has a Diploma in Cinema, Television, Stage, and Radio Arts from SAIT with a major in Radio Production, and a BMus from the University of Calgary majoring in composition. He has collaborated on a dozen or so QAS film soundtracks, and produced one animated film at QAS (so far). Other relevant work has included composing sounders for television and theatre, producing radio commercials and a radio play, and being co-Music Director of a Storybook Theatre production. He also taught boot camp in the Navy.
