Wimpy Kid Knocks Out Sucker Punch
Fox's DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES had the muscle to top Zack Snyder's critically lambasted SUCKER PUNCH. WIMPY KID 2, based on Jeff Kinney's bestselling illustrated YA book, brought in $24.4 million at #1.
Warner Bros.' SUCKER PUNCH got beat up by the critics and audiences didn't buy admissions in droves in its opening weekend. Animal Logic, Digiscope, The Moving Picture Company (MPC), Pixomondo and Prime Focus provided visual effects.
Last week's #1, LIMITLESS, fell to third, earning $15.2 million. With vfx from Comen VFX and LOOK! Effects, the sci-fi thriller has a cume of $41.3 million.
Lionsgate's THE LINCOLN LAWYER stayed strong in fourth, bringing in another $11 million. With vfx from Celluloid VFX and Furious FX, the court drama has box office receipts totaling $29 million.
Paramount's RANGO rode into fifth with $9.8 million. With animation from ILM, the animated Western has amassed $106.4 million to date.
In sixth, Sony's BATTLE: LOS ANGELES landed an additional $7.6 million. With vfx from Cinema Production Services, Cinesite, Hydraulx, Luma Pictures, Matte World Digital, Persistence of Vision Entertainment, SPIN VFX, Shade VFX, Soho VFX and Spectral Motion, the alien invasion actioner has a cume of $72.6 million.
Universal's PAUL phoned home $7.5 million in seventh place. With vfx from Double Negative, Baseblack and Spectral Motion, the Area 51 comedy lifted its cume to $24.6 million.
Warner Bros.' RED RIDING HOOD had big eyes for another $4.34 million. With vfx from Rhythm and Hues and Soho VFX, the fantasy romance has filled its basket with $32.5 million thus far.
Universal's THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU walked away with $4.25 million. With Big Film Design, Brainstorm Digital, Hirota Paint Industries (HPI), Phosphene, Proof, Realscan 3D, RhinoFX and Wildfire Visual Effects, the sci-fi romance has collected $54.9 million to date.
Disney's MARS NEED MOMS finished off the top ten with $2.19 million. The last ImageMover's performance capture feature has a disappointing cume of $19.2 million.
