Seven films that will compete in the Oscar visual effects bakeoff were announced by the Motion Picture Academy on Wednesday, according to VARIETY [1].
AVATAR, DISTRICT 9, HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, STAR TREK, TERMINATOR SALVATION, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, and 2012 all made the cut.
VARIETY added that there were some notable omissions: WATCHMEN, G-FORCE, and G.I. JOE.
The bakeoff is being held Jan. 21 at the Academy's Goldwyn Theater. The final three nominees will be announced Feb. 2 in the full Oscar nominations wrap-up.
