Vine FX was awarded the task of supplying around 1,100 shots across 13 episodes, including a fantastical array of CG creatures, Atlantian environments and FX simulations.
In a world of legendary heroes and mythical creatures, Atlantis was shot on location in Morocco and at a studio space near Chepstow in Wales. Inspired by Greek mythology, the series follows the story of Jason (Jack Donnelly), who washes up on the shores of the ancient and mysterious city of Atlantis.
The Vine FX team worked closely with Atlantis creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy (Merlin and Sugar Rush) and production designer Paul Cripps on the work which ranged from fully CG creatures to whole digital environments.
The numerous creature builds included a two headed lizard, a Minotaur, Satyrs, the Furies, a Harpie, the Campe and Medusa. The fantastical environments included the Throne Room, the Temple Courtyard, The Temple of Posiedon, the Temple of Dionysus, a CG submarine and underwater environment, and a multitude of views of Atlantis.
“We are thrilled to be part of such a fantastic TV production. Working closely with Urban Myth Films and the BBC we have produced high quality VFX that are cost effective for TV,” says VFX supervisor Michael Illingworth. “The whole team have worked tirelessly to produce a vast and varied range of VFX from fully CG creatures to whole digital environments. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved.”
Episode 10 of Atlantis will be on BBC 1 this Saturday at 8.15pm GMT, Episode 3 will be on BBC America this Saturday at 9pm ET.
